Tibhirine will is a French documentary, released in 2006, produced by Emmanuel Audrain and produced by the company .Mille and one. Movies . Its subject is the life and spirituality of the Cistercian monks of the Notre-Dame de l’Atlas abbey in Tibhirine. It was broadcast for the first time on France 3, the [ first ] . This documentary inspired producer Étienne Comar the idea of the fiction film men and gods , released in 2010 [ 2 ] .

The Tibhirine monastery cemetery.

Made 10 years after the assassination of Tibhirine monks, this documentary tells of the love of these men for this region of the Atlas mountains and its inhabitants. He reveals their daily life in the Notre-Dame de l’Atlas abbey, their activities common with the villagers, their dialogue with the latter, with a deep respect for the Muslim religion [ 3 ] .

The film also wonders about the reasons that prompted the monks to remain in this monastery, in the midst of the Algerian civil war. The night of Christmas 1993, when the monks were under the threat of a GIA commando, is thus mentioned. The will of Christian de Chergé, prior of the monastery, and the newspaper of one of the monks, serve as a framework for this story, illustrated as archive images of life in the monastery and shots shot on site, ten years After their death. The writings of monks and testimonies on them thus enlighten their deep motivations to remain [ 3 ] .

The film, however, avoids investigating the actual circumstances of their assassination after their abduction. In this sense, he inspired the scenario of fiction men and gods , which also focuses on the period preceding the disappearance of monks [ 2 ] .

He receives the support of Gilles Padovani, from the production company .Mille and one. Movies But must wait before a television channel plans to participate in the financing of the film for broadcasting.

Almost ten years after the death of the monks, the interest of the France 3 channel allows the production of the film. Emmanuel Audrain goes three times to Algeria, to question witnesses to the life of the monks and take shots in the monastery and the region. He will spend there, in all, 48 days and will above all be struck by the solidarity which united the monks, in their daily life, as in their decision to stay in Algeria despite the dangers they incurred [ 4 ] , [ 5 ] .
