Twenty One Pilots (stylized twenty øne piløts , sometimes abbreviated Upset ) is a group of American indie rock, from Columbus in Ohio. He was, at his beginnings in 2009, composed of Tyler Joseph (song, keyboards), Nick Thomas (guitar, bass) and Chris Salih (percussion). The latter two left the group in 2011 and Salih is replaced as soon as by Josh Dun. It is as a duo that the group gave notoriety, in 2012. In 2017, they won a Grammy Awards for their performance on their title Stressed Out .

After two autopublished albums, Twenty One Pilots (2009) and Regional at Best (2011), the duo joined in 2012 with the Fueled by Ramen label. Consecutive to Vessel (2013) and its modest reception, Blurryface (2015) is an international success, which has become the best -selling rock album in 2010 [ first ] , propelled in particular by the hits Stressed Out And Ride . In 2016, the group signed a new planetary tube with Heathens , main single of the soundtrack of the film Suicide Squad . After a one -year break, the duo returns with the acclaimed Trench (2018) then take advantage of the covid-19 pandemic to write Scaled and Icy (2021).

In 2022, the Twenty One Pilots sold more than 10 million records around the world and total more than 12.3 billion streams on Spotify [ 2 ] , [ 3 ] .

Training and beginnings (2009-2013) [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

The group formed in 2009 in Columbus, in Ohio, by three high school comrades: Tyler Joseph (who, solo, has already released an album, No Phun Intended ), Nick Thomas et Chris Salih [ 4 ] .

Tyler Joseph attributes its name to the group, inspired by the work All My Sons From Arthur Miller who talks about a man deciding on the fate of his family after having killed 21 pilots (hence “Twenty One Pilots”) during the Second World War because of the delivery of defective plane coins [ 5 ] . He explains that the moral of history inspired the name of the group [ 6 ] .

The , Twenty One Pilots offers the public a first album, Twenty One Pilots , and embarks on a tour through Ohio. The same year was released Johnny Boy EP which includes 6 songs including Time to say goodbye.

In the middle of 2011, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih leave the group for lack of time. Joshua Dun, a former live drummer from House of Heroes, joins them. The second album or the mixtape, Regional at Best , leaves it , composed only by Joseph and Dun. The album is accompanied by a free CD distributed to the New Albany High School. In , they play a closed -stop concert at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, attracting the attention of a dozen labels [ 7 ] . The group finally decides to sign at the Fueled by Ramen label in Atlantic Records.

In , during a closed -looking concert at the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion, they announce their signature with the Fueled by Ramen label, a subsidiary of the Warner Music group which collaborates with artists such as Fall Out Boy or Panic! Scaled and Icy (2021-2023) [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

The sixth studio album of the duo, Scaled and Icy, was released on May 21, 2021. The name of the album is an anagram, which states “Clancy is Dead” (ie “Clancy is dead” in French) [ Ref. desired] , and a mixture with the expression “reduced and isolated”, written by Tyler Joseph. On March 4, 2019, five months after the release of their fifth Studio Trench album, the group confirmed that they were working on their next studio album. The Livestream Experience , described as “covering the whole career” of the group, includes performance of songs Scaled and Icy , as well as previous albums. The purchase of a ticket for Livestream provided fans with a six-week pre-show experience with exclusive access to variants of goods and albums [ Ref. desired] . In a promotional video, Josh Dun compared access before the show to experience as queuing with other fans before the start of a concert.

The music of Twenty One Pilots is often described as rock or alternative hip-hop [ 34 ] . The first three albums of the group are considered to be related to the post-emo genre (in) [ 37 ] , in the wake of groups like My Chemical Romance or Dashboard Confessional. The influence of hip-hop is much more marked from the album Blurryface (2015), which also brings pop, reggae, even dancehall or even breakbeat inspirations as on Lane Boy . Scaled and Icy (2021) introduces more standard tones for rock music, including rhythmic guitar or an electric guitar with a fuzz effect and a solo on Never Take It .

Nevertheless, the group does not intend to associate with a specific genre [ 38 ] And prefers to surprise listeners with each song [ 39 ] . Inspired by several musical genres passing through electro, rock, pop, rap [ 40 ] , the folk [ 41 ] , at the funk [ 42 ] or Indie Pop, the lyricist and composer of the Tyler Joseph group mixes psychodramatic and introspective words with piano arrangements, hard rock energy or ballads in the ukulelele [ 43 ] . Joseph’s rap style is often compared to that of Macklemore [ 37 ] Eminem egg [ 39 ] .

The duo composes their music using instruments such as bass, ukulele, piano and battery. Unusual for so -called rock training, the guitar is replaced by the synthesizer: software and keyboards produce programmed electronic sounds in place of Riffs [ 37 ] . Regarding percussion, Josh Dun operates with a PAD percussion but his recognition is mainly due to his vitality behind his battery. They notably use a MacBook Pro from the stage from which they launch their creations, montages and other musical accompaniments, using software like Main Stage and Logic Pro. [Ref. necessary]

Karl Hagstrom Miller, Professor in History and Musicology at the University of Virginia in the United States, quotes Twenty One Pilots as a characteristic example of the evolution of modern groups by going from traditional training guitar-Bassery of punk music -Rock to “other configurations of musical collaboration” [ 37 ] .

In 2021, the group launched a virtual concert experience on the Roblox online video game platform. The show called The Twenty One Pilots Concert Experience lasts about twenty minutes and allows players to move to an interactive universe while listening to several music interpreted by the virtual avatars of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun [ 49 ] , [ 50 ] , [ 51 ] . During the days preceding the event, players could explore a world created specially for the occasion when they could recover elements of personalization on the theme of the group for their character [ 52 ] .
