Twenty years later is a French silent film of ten episodes, directed by Henri Diamant-Berger, released in 1922.
This is the continuation (adapted from the novel of the same title, Twenty years later , of Alexandre Dumas), of Three musketeers of which Diamant-Berger turned a version filmed the previous year, in 1921. To interpret the main character (d’Artagnan), Jean Yonnel replaces Aimé Simon-Girard, and Marguerite Moreno succeeds Jeanne Desclos in the role of Anne D ‘Austria. Henri Rollan (Athos), Charles Martinelli (Porthos), Pierre de Guingand (Aramis) and Armand Bernard (Planchet) find the characters they interpreted in The three Musketeers .
first – The ghost of Richelieu , 2 – The Dungeon of Vincennes , 3 – The Battle of Lens , 4 – Milady’s son , 5 – The street war , 6 – In opposite camps , 7 – At the foot of the scaffold , 8 – The feliches of the lightning , 9 – The battle of Charenton , ten – The Adventure of Centralia Mazarin
Twenty years have passed since the end of Three musketeers . To protect the young king Louis XIV, his mother Anne of Austria and Cardinal Mazarin, threatened by the Fronde, of Artagnan – the only one of the four having remained a musketeer – must find his former companions. He successively meets Aramis (become abbot but remained a musketeer in the soul), Porthos (rich provincial lord) and Athos (country gentleman), but only Porthos agrees to regain service. The four former companions will be opposed several times, Athos and Aramis having chosen the camp of the rebellious princes. They thus find themselves face to face after the escape of the dungeon of Vincennes of a leader of the Party of the Princes, the Duke of Beaufort who, escorted by Athos and Aramis, is prosecuted (on the order of Mazarin) by d’Artagnan and Porthos.
The four heroes later find themselves in England, where two camps also compete: the supporters of King Charles I is , which is supported by some faithful of which Athos and Aramis are part, and those of Cromwell, to whom Mazarin (his new ally) sent from Artagnan and Porthos (the Cromwell envoy to Mazarin is Mordaunt, who n ‘ is other than Milady’s son). Charles I is is captured by the supporters of Cromwell; Athos and Aramis find themselves “prisoners” of D’Artagnan and Porthos, and they manage to escape Mordaunt, who swore the loss of the four French murderers of his mother. All four plan to escape the king but they fail, and Charles I is is beheaded. They manage to embark to return to France, and thwart the attempt to Mordaut to make them perish by exploding the ship in the open sea; Mordaunt is killed.
Back in France, d’Artagnan and Porthos are stopped (they did not accomplish the mission entrusted by Mazarin), then issued by their friends. The cardinal is captured in turn and must grant concessions to the four companions and the slingers.
