Henryk Wieniawski (July 10, 1835 – March 31, 1880) was a Polish composer and violinist.

The Concours International de Violon Henryk Wieniawski is an international violin competition that takes place every five years in the city of Poznań in Poland.

The international violin competition Henryk Wieniawski was established in March 1935 for the first time and took place in the prestigious building of the Varsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. He was thus called in honor of the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Polish violinist, composer and pedagogue Henryk Wieniawski (1835-1880) [ first ] .

The competition was suspended due to the dramatic events of the Second World War, then the post -war political disturbances.

In 1952, the competition resumed in the city of Poznań [ first ] .

The prices are awarded according to the medal classification

  • Gold medal: 30,000 euros
  • Silver medal: 20,000 euros
  • Bronze medal: 12,000 euros

In 1935, for the first prize, the gold medal was awarded to the French violinist Ginette Neveu and the silver medal to the Russian David Oïstrakh, then in order the Englishman Henri Tymian, the Russian Boris Goldstein, the Croatian Ljerko Spiller, the Italian Maria Sardo, the Polish Ida Handel.
