A winged unicorn , sometimes named alicorne , is a fantastic horse with a unique horn and a pair of wings. Although this type of representation is listed in art and heraldry, and Irish poet William Butler Yeats imagines a unicorn with wings in his 1907 room The Unicorn from the Stars , these creatures are probably a recent invention of fantasy and New Age, popularized in the 1980s. Combination of unicorn and pegasus, symbols of purity, poetry, reverie and magic, the winged unicorns are represented in Drawings and cited in channel -like visions.

Winged unicorns are present in animated films and series, especially for little and young girls, such as She-ra, the Princess of Power , Unique , Kléo or My Little Pony . We also find them in the literatures of the imaginary and in the form of toys. In these universes, they are most often similar to “super-shelters”, symbols of power.

Without specific name, winged unicorns are sometimes named with views formed by the words “unicorne” and “pegase”. In certain cultural productions, they are called “Alicornes” ( alicorn , in English), coming from the historical name of the Corn of unicorn in English language [ first ] . We also find the forms pegacorn , unipeg And drowsiness in English.

According to Bruno Faidutti’s thesis, the winged unicorn as it is imagined and symbolized today is only a modern creation of fantasy and New Age. There is therefore no voluntary representation in traditional iconography [ 2 ] . Likewise, the humorous work Raising Unicorns brings up the diffusion of Pegacorn in the 1980s [ 3 ] .

The winged unicorns bring together the symbolism of two legendary creatures, the unicorn and pegasus, combining purity and poetic inspiration [ 4 ] . They are mentioned in the drawings, dreams and visions of different people. According to a study on schizophrenia published in 1992, a patient has seen himself with “The upper part of the body of a knight and the lower body of a winged unicorn” [ 5 ] . The study of the drawings of a six -year -old autistic girl (in 2010) reveals a predominance of winged unicorns, allowing her to “Create partners with whom she appropriates the world” [ 6 ] .

In a New Age book based on Channeling (2014), unicorns are described as living in an angelic kingdom on a different vibratory frequency that makes them invisible. Victor Segalen discovers representations of Ki-lins, which he describes as winged unicorns, in ancient Chinese statuary:

“The next day the sun seemed […], playing on the crystal clear facets of the most beautiful wings opened in stone
that the whole dynasty of the Aang has cut; This winged horse, this unicorn, here it is in its most beautiful aspects, now emerging to the knees. The head, the fluted chamfer, the well -shaped round eye, the simply braided mane lost nothing to connect, even by a formidable neckline, with a rump, little together – with well muscular shoulders of vertical beams. »»

– Victor Segalen, China. The great statuary [ 13 ]

But he also specifies the difficulties posed by the translation of ” Ki-Lin “In Chinese by” unicorn “in French [ 14 ] . Esoterist Francesca-Yvonne Caroutch also describes these statues as being those of “winged unicorns” [ 15 ] . She also quotes a tapestry entitled Prudence or wisdom , which presents a Western unicorn with wings in the rest of the seven virtues [ 16 ] .

In modern representations, the name “winged unicorn” perhaps clearly used to designate the creature, for example in the illustrations of Helen M. Stevens [ 17 ] .

Irish poet William Butler Yeats imagines a winged beast that he associates with laughter and ecstatic destruction. This beast takes the form of a winged unicorn in its 1907 room, The Unicorn from the Stars , and later that of the « rough beast slouching towards Bethlehem » in his poem The Second Coming [ 18 ] . Georges-Olivier Châteaureynaud mentions a waterproof tendency in the form of a winged unicorn in his novel At the bottom of the paradise [ 19 ] . In France, editions of the winged unicorn publish and distribute the work of François Brousse [ 20 ] , more than 600 conferences [ 21 ] .

The winged unicorn is in the emblematic of two American units created during the Second World War. The shoulder badge of the 13 It is airborne division, approved the , represents an orange golden orange unicorn on an overseas blue background. Animal wings are an explicit reference to air transportation of members of the division [ 22 ] . The emblem of the 817th Air Transport Expeditionary Squadron (in) , for its part, is a winged white unicorn symbolizing power and speed, representing “The unit in the process of fulfilling its mission” [ 23 ] .

In the United Kingdom, the emblem of British Airborne Units The appearance of a winged horse with a horn, mounted. However, this is not a voluntary representation of winged unicorn, but that of Bellérophon on Pegasus [ 24 ] .

He attacks with gusts created by his wings and rays from his horn. The Power Rangers manage to defeat him by cutting his horn [ 29 ] . Fougor appears from the first episode of the series, broadcast the in the USA. Later, the series reveals that his wife Star Wind and all the inhabitants of Licornes Island (in V.O. Unicorn Island ), Including their foal, are also winged unicorns. Swift Wind / Fougor is present from April 1986 in the American comic from the series, Princess of Power magazine [ 36 ] . There are also derivative products. In the series, Fougor is white with orange crops and hooves, while the first figurine is pink with golden accessories, and pink hair to style [ 34 ] . There are other editions of figurines representing Fougor [ 37 ] .

The transformation of Lightning into Fougor takes on a phallic symbolism with young girls to whom this animation series is proposed, because (in addition to the wings) a horn pushes on the head of the horse when She-Ra launches his incantation with his sword . Like many other elements of this series, the winged unicorn finds its sources in popular folklore and mythology [ 38 ] .

Une opération promotionnelle My Little Pony au San Diego Comic-Con.

Winged unicorns are particularly associated with the world of My Little Pony Hasbro and its derivative products after 2010, including the television series. All the princesses of Equestria are indeed winged unicorns; Some episodes are dedicated to them. As a ponies of royal status, the winged unicorns ensure the smooth running of the world, in particular the alternation of the day and the night [ 39 ] . Princess Celestia thus plays a role that joins that of other white horses in myths and legends [ 40 ] .

The winged unicorns do not have a specific name in the first season, so the Celestia and Luna sisters are simply called “unicorns”, despite the fact that they have wings. Thereafter, they are named ” Alicorn “In the original version, translated as” winged unicorn ” [ 41 ] or «Alicors’ [ 42 ] in French.

In general, princesses are not supposed to be Alicorns at birth (except for the girl of Shining Armor and Cadence). However, a mare can become an Alicorne under certain circumstances, generally by having accomplished a feat. Thus, Twilight becomes one after completing a powerful spell [ 42 ] , while Cozy Glow becomes it after being exposed to an ancient magic artifact.
