Wompou (or Hole , in Arabic : And Abu ) is a town in southern Mauritania, located in the Guidimakha region. It is the chief town of the Moughataaa From the same name, the department of Wompou.

The municipality of Wompou is located west in the Guidimakha region and it covers 660 km 2 .

It is delimited to the north by the town of Ar, southeast and east by the town of Gouraye, in the southwest by the Senegal river, which makes the border with Senegal, to the west by the municipalities of Sagné and Toulel.

Wompou is an important city in the region, with a young and dynamic population mainly made up of Soninkes, Maures, Peuls, Wolofs and Bambaras.

Wompou is one of the villages in the Historical Historical Province of Haïré [ first ] , Gououné, Dembaca, Dembaca, Gomal, Gomalel, Mourou you [ first ] .

As in the main villages of the Haïré, it is the submarine from the Mandé who occupy the chiefdom [ first ] . During the RGPH of 2013, the town had 13,250 [ 3 ] , an annual growth of 2.4% over 13 years.

The , the Mauritanian government has adopted a draft decree giving rise to the creation of six new Moughataas across the country, including that of Wompou. The arrondissement of Wompou, in the department of Sélibabi, becomes a full -fledged Moughataa [ 4 ] . It is made up of three municipalities: Ajar, Arr and Wompou, which is the capital.

The creation of this Moughataa is highly appreciated by local residents and administrations, who have made it known [ 5 ] .

Agriculture is at the center of the Wompou economy, like almost all the municipalities of the region. But this economy is fragile because it encounters obstacles to its development, in particular the climatic conditions or the lack of means of farmers. To cope with these obstacles, the state or different NGOs finance projects that improve the living conditions of the inhabitants.

Many agricultural developments were carried out in Wompou. In 2020, a total of 100 ha arrangements were funded by the State [ 6 ] And many others since, such as a cattle market at the end of 2021 [ 7 ] .

Wompou has a category B health center covering these health needs as well as those of the municipalities of Ajar and arr. The building has staff including a general practitioner, midwife and nurses as well as an ultrasound room, another for operations, a nutrition center and an ambulance [ 8 ] .

Following violent floods during the rainy season of 2020, Wompou as well as six other municipalities in the region received donations of equipment offered by the United Nations Population Fund in December 2020. Many kits made up of mats, covers and bags containing personal effects intended for women were distributed to the inhabitants of the town [ 9 ] .
