Overview of the case [ edit ]

In November 1873, there was a party of 19 people departing Salt Lake, Utah. They were on the waves of the gold rush that made the world crazy and aimed for a gathering. The explorers (Yamashi) acted as the 19 guides. Alfred Packer (Alfred G. “Alfeld” Packer, Alfred G. “Alferd” Packer). By the way, there were 19 people seeking money in the mountains, but 10 of them received advice from the Indian in the village who arrived on the way, saying, “I can’t find money. It’s better to give up and turn back.” rice field. The remaining nine who could not give up asked for a gathering and still searched for money in the mountains, but four more judged that “I can’t trust the packer”, but two of the four. Was a distress on the way. Four of the five who finally remained in the mountains never lived and returned.

In March of the following year, the packer returned alone. He claimed to have been left behind by four, but for some reason it was bloody and had a lot of money. At that time, two Indians asked a sheriff. He picked up white meat in the mountains. The meat was clearly demolished with a knife, so Packer killed four people and was pursued on suspicion of eating a corpse. Packer, on the other hand, said, “A duplicate was started due to food shortage, and was killed from weakness. Finally, he was attacked by a surviving man, killing him, but he killed him. I survived by eating. ” If this is the case, it can be considered that the Packer’s action was a legitimate defense and it was inevitable to survive.

Later, four corpses were found. The three of them were traces of being shot in the back of the head, and the other was crushed. In addition, four victims were found in the hut near the site. Packer’s testimony is clearly a mess, and he surely killed all four, and the body was “food” until spring came.

The sheriff tried to prosecute the packer, but before he escaped. Nine years later, in 1883, a sighting information was given that Packers were named John Schwarts in Wyoming and joined a group of lawyers. On March 12 of the same year, Packer was arrested and taken to Coloradado.

On April 3, 1883, Packer’s trial began with the charges of killing Israel Swan. He asserted in the court, saying, “The friends killed each other unilaterally. I only killed the bell, and this was just a legitimate defense.” However, the first jury did not admit his claim, eventually being guilty and declared.

However, in October 1885, the Supreme Court gave permission to retrial. Packers were guilty of each murder and were sentenced to 40 years in prison. The 40th year in prison was the longest time imprisonment at the time. The judge said to the packer and sweared like this

“Hindale County has only seven Democrats, but you’ve eaten five of them!

Packer was released on January 1, 1901 by pardon after being sentenced to 17 years of heavy labor. He died on April 24, 1907 on a ranch near Demper at the age of 65, but claimed that he was innocent until he died.
