There is a lot of enthusiasm in Bergamo after the excellent previous season. The Florentine coach proposes the “system” as a way of playing by replacing the ancient “method”. The company opts for the renovation of the budget (which at the end of the 1947-48 championship had 40 million debts). To improve the situation, a shopping campaign was adopted to save: Manente was sold to Juventus for Dalmonte and money, with Lazio there was the Todeschini exchange in Rome and Cecconi in Bergamo. Vittorio Schiavi after 14 seasons with the Nerazzurri shirt passes to Brescia while Salvi goes to Palazzolo in Serie C.
The beginning seems good, already on the second day the Great Turin at the municipal. But in the long run, the change of game imposed by the coach, who was not well assimilated by his players, makes himself heard. At the beginning of 1949, the team is last in the standings, leading not a few controversies within the Nerazzurri environment. Bertil Nordahl, brother of Gunnar (Milan player) was purchased to handle a team in total difficulty.
On March 6, the Florentine coach resignation, no longer feeling the trust of the group. In his place the full-back Alberto Citterio was temporarily promoted who leads the team in the match against Bologna (1-1). The following week Carlo Carcano is made official. The new coach relies on young people, making Antonio Caprioli and Giancarlo Cadè make his debut. The results begin to come.
Salvation arrives on the last day of the championship, winning the direct clash in Livorno, condemning the amaranth team to relegation.
On June 17, 1949, the boys team led by Giuseppe Ciatto gave Atalanta the first scudetto at the youth level by winning the final against Lazio. In that team there are players such as Battista Rota and Livio Roncoli who will be protagonists in the first team a few years later.
