A Plymouth Sundance Coupé produced from 1987 to 1990

The Shadow It is a compact car produced from the Dodge from 1987 to 1994. He had a “twin” model made by the Plymouth which was called Plymouth Sundance and who had comparable commercial feedback.

A Dodge Shadow five doors Hatchback produced from 1987 to 1988
A 1991 Dodge Shadow Cabriolet

The Shadow and Sundance were launched on the markets to replace, respectively, the second series of the Dodge Charger and the Dodge Omni, as well as the models connected to the latter, but marketed with other brands. In addition, Shadow replaced Renault Alliance Sedan (which was based on AMC models) after the Chrysler acquired Renault, in 1987, the aforementioned car manufacturer. In fact, the Renault brand, on the occasion, was officially withdrawn from the United States and Canada.

Shadow and Sundance were assembled with Sterling Heights, Michigan, and Toluca, Mexico, where they were sold as “Chrysler Shadow” from 1988 to 1989. The first specimen came out of the assembly chains on August 25, 1986 for the Model Year 1987.

Both the two -door models and the four -door ones were built using a variant of the Chrysler K platform, which was known as platform P. The latter was based on some components and on the suspensions of the Dodge Daytona, and on the Dodge car body Lancer.

While Shadow seemed to have a three -volume bodywork equipped with the trunk counter, in reality this car body was hatchback, that is, it was equipped with two volumes and a large rear tailgate. The Dodge underlined this aspect by reporting, in an advertising slogan, that Shadow had a “typical versatility of the hatchbacks, which however was hidden” (in English “Hidden Hatchback Versatility”). The great load capacity was in fact an added value. The Peugeot 309, which was developed to replace the European Horizon, owned a layout similar to that of the subcompract Peugeot 205, rather than a “truncated” platform of a mid-size car. Three types of bodywork were offered of the Shadow, three or five doors and two -door hatchbacks.

Carroll Shelby modified, through its company, many shadow in high performance models. For example, he made the CSX Shelby, which owned a 2.2 LA of turbocharged engine 174 hp of power. Thanks to the low weight and the good engine, these Shadow were able to have an acceleration equal to or higher than that of many muscle cars and sports cars of the time. A version without intercooler, whose engine provided 150 HP, was sold by the Thrifty as CSX-T.

The Cabriolet version of the Shadow made its debut in 1991, that is, in the same year in which the Dodge introduced the “America” economic package, which was ordered on hatchbacks and coupes.

At the time, Shadow and Sundance were the least expensive models on the American market to be equipped with a series of driver side airbags. The latter was then mounted as standard on all Chrysler models in 1990. In 1989 Shadow was updated. Specifically, the front and rear lights were changed, and the grille was renewed. In 1994, for the Shadow destined for the US market, the motorized safety belt for the front passenger was added with the intention of satisfying the safety regulations of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 on the subject of passive withholding tax. However, this was not done for the models marketed in Canada, given that in this country the laws were different, and the Dodge was forced to sell the shadow with manual seat belts.

However, their installation depended on the chosen set -up level.

Since April 1988 to mid -1991, Chrysler offered the Dodge Shadow in many European markets. He was marketed as Chrysler ES . This European model was practically identical to the Dodge Shadow eg.

Offer with three -door hatchback bodywork only, the European Shadow had installed the 2.2 l injecting engine as standard. The supercharged version was offered among the options. In 1989 the 2.2 L engine was replaced by the 2.5 L engine. The motorcycle was transmitted to the wheels thanks to a five -speed manual gearbox but was offered, among the options, a three -speed automatic transmission.

Sales of the European model were modest, and therefore Chrysler decided to remove it from the market in mid -1991 without the immediate launch of any successor. The latter arrived in 1995, when the Chrysler Neon was introduced.
