The Metalurgs Liepaja (officially Football Club Liepaja Metalurgs ) It was a Latvian football club of Liepāja. The name generally indicates the football team, although it can also refer to HK Liepaja Metalurgs , Liepāja hockey team. The company was dissolved at the end of the 2013 Verslīga, the first division of the national championship in which it played, due to the bankruptcy of its only sponsor, the metallurgical company Liepaja Metalurg [first] .

It was the heir of Red metallurgist , one of the most titled teams of the Latvian Soviet Regional Championship, as well as the second Latvian team (after the Daugava Riga) to participate in the Soviet championships with the name of Fisherman in Liepaja .

In 2005 it was the first Latvian football team different from the Skonto Riga to win the national championship. It also arrived four times second in the Latvia Cup.

The beginnings [ change | Modifica Wikitesto ]

With the arrival of the Soviets, all the Latvian teams were dissolved: among this also the Olimpija Liepāja, one of the most titled beds teams; part of the players and technicians were involved in the creation of the Daugava Liepaja . This formation at the first championship immediately came second, and then won the title in 1946 and 1947, also conquering the national cup simultaneously.

Red metallurgist [ change | Modifica Wikitesto ]

In 1949 the company joined with the Dynamo Liepaja (team that while not participating in the Maximum Latvian series had managed to win the national cup in 1948) giving life to the Red metallurgist : This formation was located being the strongest Latvian team of the 1950s, winning almost all the titles of the championship as well as three consecutive bed cups. These successes led to create a sort of union between the Daugava Riga and the Sarkanais Metalurgs since 1954: the Daugava Riga participated in the Soviet national championships (the only Latvian team), while the Sarkanais Metalurgs was practically the reserve team, participating (successfully ) to the Latvian regional championship.

In the national championships [ change | Modifica Wikitesto ]

In 1960 he was finally granted to the team to participate in the national championships: the club was renamed Krasny Metallurg Liepaja And he participated in class B, at the time second level of Soviet football. The following year the team was renamed Selmash Liepaja And he ended up last in class B. The following year there was a new change of denomination, becoming Fisherman Liepaja ; With this name he participated in the Soviet national championships, always militating between the second and third level, until 1989, the year in which he relegated to the fourth division.

First years after independence [ change | Modifica Wikitesto ]

In 1991 he stopped participating in the national championships, going to the Latvian one, where he finished third. In the first year post independence in 1992 ended sixth, while in the following seventh: it was the last championship with the name of Olimpija Liepāja; in the following year he participated how FK Liepaja , relegating for the first time.

The team, however, participated again in Verslīga thanks to the acquisition of the title of the DAG Riga: the name given to the club was that of Dag Liepaja ; the following year (1996) he changed his name again in Baltika Liepaja .

Liepaja Metalurg [ change | Modifica Wikitesto ]

Only in 1997, thanks to the sponsorship of the local metallurgical company, the club found economic stability: the club passed to the current name of Liepājas Metalurgs and positioned itself permanently at the top of the Latvian championship.

It was precisely the Liepājas Metalurgs that broke the undisputed domain of the Skrono Riga, Latvian champion for 13 years in a row, winning the title in 2005. Overall after independence he won two championships and a national cup, as well as a Baltic League.

Dissolution [ change | Modifica Wikitesto ]

In November 2013 the owner of the metallurgical company Liepaja Metalurg , the only sponsor of the football club, said bankruptcy [2] . As a result, the Futbola Klubs Liepājas Metalurgs was dissolved and canceled by the registers at the beginning of 2014 [first] .
