Frederic Zelnik , nato Friedrich Zelnik (Černivci, 17 May 1885 – London, 29 November 1950), was a German director, actor and film producer who became British subjects in the war years.

Zelnik was born on May 17, 1885 in CzerNowitz (currently he is in Ukraine, but at the time still belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire). After studying law, he began working in the theater as an actor. He recited in Nuremberg, Prague, Worms, Aquisgrana and Berlin with the name Friedrich Zelnik. He arrived at the cinema in 1914, first debuting as an actor, therefore as a director and producer.

He founded, together with Walter Behrend and Max Liebenau, a production company, the Berliner Film-Manukfaktur. Star of the studio became Zelnik’s wife, the actress Lya Mara, a dancer that the director had met in Prague [first] . Famous for his genre and popular film films, Zelnik – in the 1930s – moved to work in Great Britain also producing two films in the Netherlands. During the war, he took British citizenship taking the name of Fred Zelnik [first] .
