( It’s a Living ; Then Making a Living From the second season) is an US television series in 120 episodes broadcast for the first time during 6 seasons from 1980 to 1989. Lois Adams, Vicki Allen, Cassie Cranston, Dot Higgins, Jan Hoffmeyer, Amy Tompkins and Ginger St. James work as a waiter in the elegant restaurant Above the Top , which is located in the upper part of the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. The waiter and staff are assisted by Nancy Beebe (Marian Mercer), maitre of the restaurant, who sometimes fraternizes with the girls. In the chaotic work environment are also the chef Mario (then replaced first by Dennis, played by Earl Boen, and then by Howard Miller, played by Richard Stahl, who intertwines a love relationship with Nancy) and the witty pianist Sonny Mann ( Paul Kreppel), who usually make rude comments against women, including Nancy who does not disdain to counter out the teasing. The series was widely reorganized at the end of the first season, with two of the five waiter, Lois Adams and Vicki Allen (played by Susan Sullivan and Wendy Schaal) replaced by Maggie McBurney (played by Louise Lasser). However, the changes did not have the hoped for effects and the series was canceled after two seasons to be taken up again in Syndication three years later. During this second phase, the series obtained a good response of the public which pushed the producers to make it forward for four other seasons (which are added to the first two bringing the total to six seasons). Most of the cast remained intact compared to that of the first phase. Only a new waitress, Amy Tompkins (Crystal Bernard) is added, immediately accepted by the group. When Ann Jillian decided to leave the series in 1986 (he had agreed to make only a season in Syndication for serious health reasons), he was replaced by Sheryl Lee Ralph in the role of Ginger St. James. With these cast members, the series continued with numerous episodes (broadcast all in syndication) until 1989.
