Established in 1985, it is organized since the first edition by the Sammarinese Federation Gioco Calcio. Located in the 55th and last place of the UEFA ranking for national championships, the tournament gives the winning team the right to participation in the first preliminary round of UEFA Champions League and the second classified in the first preliminary round of UEFA Europa Conference League.

The champion team gets the right to the dispute of the Sammarinese Super Cup against the winner of the Titan Cup, the national cup.

From 2018-2019 the championship is divided into three phases. The 15 participating teams are divided into two Italian groups, A and B, with one -way games. The first four classified of each group form the Q1 group of the second phase, the remaining group Q2: both groups of the second phase include round -trip games.
At the end of the second phase, the first 6 classified of the Q1, the first classified of Q2 and the winner of the playoff between the second and third classified of Q2, access the play-offs, provided that the third does not have a detachment greater than 5 Points, otherwise, will access the play-offs directly the second classified of Q2.

The play-offs are held with a direct elimination scoreboard, with the first of the Q1 that challenges the winner of the playoff of Q2, the second of Q1 plays against the first of Q2, and then the third against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth of the Q1. The quarter -finals and the semifinals take place in round -trip competitions without additional times or penalties: in the event that the sum of the goals of the two teams is identical, it will be the best classified team during the previous phases to access the next round. The final that will decide the San Marino champion will be played in the single match with the possibility of extra and penalties.

The winner of the championship accesses the first preliminary round of UEFA Champions League and the second and third classified in the first preliminary round of UEFA Europa League. While the winner of the Titan Cup will go to the UEFA Conference League preliminaries.

The championship takes place among the aforementioned 15 teams, but the pitch for each game is drawn among those available in the territories of the Republic:

The tournament final is played in the San Marino Stadium in Serravalle, equipped with 4,877 seats.

The first summer tournaments [ change | Modifica Wikitesto ]

As early as the 1920s, football was present in the Republic of San Marino and in 1928 the first team was born, Libertas, followed by the Titania sports union.

The Sammarinese Federation Gioco Calcio was born in 1931 and the first ancestor of the Sammarinese championship, built under the patronage of Sammarinese Authority for sports activities , took place in 1937; Four teams participated there: the Libertas of Borgo Maggiore, the Castellana di Serravalle, the Fiorita di Montegiardino and the Serenissima di Città di San Marino. The first day was played on April 21 and the tournament ended with the victory of Libertas, which will also be repeated in the second edition the following year.
Then there was a break due to the Second World War and its consequences. He recovered in 1950; The teams registered in the tournament were always four, but with two novelties: the florit and the Serenissima were replaced by Kursaal and the Guaita, both of San Marino Città. As in 1937, it was only played on the Borgo Maggiore field and at the end of the one week tournament triumphed the formation of the house once again. Subsequently, in 1954, in 1958, in 1959 and 1961 four other editions of this summer tournament were organized, all won by Libertas. These tournaments will not then be considered as editions of the championship, but equated to the Titan Cup, an event that was born only in 1965.

At the same time, in addition to these tournaments, in 1959 the Federation set up the Serenissima, which will then take the name of San Marino Calcio, with the aim of participating exclusively in the Italian football championship after, In the previous season, it was Libertas/three pens who played in Italian divisions [ without source ] .

The birth in the eighties [ change | Modifica Wikitesto ]

In 1980 there was the first sketch of a real Sammarinese championship, necessary for the federation to be recognized by the international football organs (UEFA and Fifa); After five trial editions, in 1985 the first official championship started, provisionally affiliated to FIFA.

The Sammarinese football championship 1985-1986 was presented to the press on October 2, 1985 and was played in a single series, with a single Italian group of 17 teams and one-way competitions. The first 9 classified formed the following season the first division, series A1, while the last 8 the second, Serie A2. On April 27, 1986 the season ended with the victory of the Faetano.

In 1986 it was then passed to two divisions and the Serie A1 1986-1987 championship was organized with Italian group, with round-trip competitions. The first four classified had access to the play-offs, while the last two relegated to the A2 series. The final of the championship, played between the Fiorita di Montegiardino and the Faetano of the homonymous castle, was won 2-0 by La Fiorita, which won the title.

The 1987-1988 edition saw a modification of the two championships, with the A1 that passed from nine to ten teams and the A2 that was reduced from eight to six. The formula remained unchanged, with play-offs for the top four and relegation for the last two classified. The final was won by three flowers on Virtus to penalty shots for 6-5.

In the first seven editions there was a substantial balance, with always a different winner than the previous season, but from 1992-1993 the three flowers conquered three consecutive titles. The cycle was interrupted by Libertas, the Summer Tournament Matter of the beginning of the century, who won her first championship in the 1995-1996 season.

From the 1996-1997 edition, the championship took place again in a single series, divided into two Italian groups, A and B. between the first leg and the second round, where the teams met the opponents of the respective groups, The intergirone was played, with the formations of the first group that faced those of the second in one -way races. The first three classified in each group qualified in the play-offs for the assignment of the title. Folgore won the first championship with the new formula, beating the 2-1 florit in the final. Three badges will arrive in four years, broken by the Faetano. In 2000 the merger between the Juvenes sports club and the Dogana sports group took place and this meant that the championship descended to 15 teams, without however changing the formula.

The new millennium with access to Europe [ change | Modifica Wikitesto ]

The first championship of the 21st century ended with the victory of Cosmos, but the yellow-green joy lasted only a year, because from the following season the domain of the Domagnano began, which lasted four years with an internal parenthesis, that of the year 2003-2004, designed Red pen. The six titles at stake from 2005 to 2011 were score between two only teams, walled and three flowers, who signed a hat -trick each. The second was that of Tre Fiori, which in this way repeated the extraordinary performance of the three-year period 1992-1995.

The seasons 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 rewarded the three pens, which then repeated in 2015-2016 after the triumphs of La Fiorita and Folgore. In the 2016-2017 season to raise the most coveted trophy of the Republic, the flority was again, in the year of his fiftieth anniversary, while the title of the 2017-2018 season ended up in the bulletin board of the Montegiardino company.

The format will remain unchanged until the 2018-2019 season, when the second group stage was inserted and the following direct elimination playoff. Formula that until now has only been played once in that in 2019-2020 the Covid-19 pandemic forced the Federation to stop the championship and in the following season to modify the format, opting a single ride of a one-way, to reduce the number of games and finish the tournament regularly.

In 2006 UEFA granted the Sammarinese Federation to participate in a team in European competitions, guaranteeing a place in the UEFA Cup. The winning team of the 2005-2006 championship, the Murata who beat Pennarossa in the final, had access to the first preliminary round of the UEFA Cup 2006-2007 for the first time in the history of a Titan team. From the following year, on the other hand, the first classified in the championship had access to the first preliminary round of the UEFA Champions League, with the second classified, or the defeated team in the final for the Scudetto, to the preliminaries of the Europa League. It was still the Murata, which won the 2006-2007 championship by beating Libertas 5-0, to have the possibility of participating in the subsequent Champions League for the first time. Due to the reform of European competitions from 2021 San Marino will no longer qualify a team at the UEFA Europa League but will bring two teams to the UEFA Europa Conference League, the new UEFA competition, the third in importance, thus increasing the number of participants every year at international competitions.
