The lake is placed on the border between the provinces of Pavia and Piacenza, between the municipalities of Zavattarello and Alta Val Tidone [2] .

The name of the lake derives from the inhabited center of Trebecco, located on the opposite side of Mount Bissolo with respect to the lake, in whose municipal territory, at the time of the construction of the dam that originated the lake, a large part of the basin was included [first] . Over the years, the name of Lago del Molato has been joined to the official name, deriving from the name of the dam, which in turn originated from the Rio Molato, left tributary of the Tidone near whose mouth the dam was built, also due to the suppression of the Municipality of Trebecco, which took place in 1928 [first] .

Lake and Monte Bissolo

The artificial lake is located at the foot of Monte Bissolo, a hilly relief located on the right bank of the Tidone torrent, which rises from the eastern bank of the pelvis with extremely steep walls composed largely from mixed deficit woods in which the oak prevails. The woods alternate, to a lesser extent, meadows dedicated to pasture and tree -lined pastures [3] .

The lake has a clumsy basin of 83 km² , is at a height of 359 m a.s.l.m. reaches a maximum depth of 49 m [4] and has a maximum capacity of just under 8 600 000  m³ of water [5] .

The lake is skirted on the western side by the former state road 412 of the Val Tidone, while on the opposite bank there is a path, inserted on the route of the Tidone path, itinerary that connects the Source of the Tidone with its mouth in the Po [6] .

After several ideas had occurred in the early twentieth century regarding the regulation of the waters of Val Tidone, the executive project of the construction of the Molato dam was drawn up in 1920 by the engineer Augusto Ballerio, who would then cover The position of general manager during the construction works of the discharge, with the support, as consultants, of Professor Arturo Danusso, who dealt with the static part and the engineer Claudio Segrè, who took care of the geological part [7] .

The construction works, operated by the Bonomi, Marinoni and Cavallazzi company, began in 1921; In 1923 the company was replaced by the Riccardo Filippa company, based in Turin, which completed its construction in 1928. During the works, the material used for the construction of the dam, was transported by the neighboring center of Caminata up to the place of construction through the use of carts [3] .

Once the works were completed, the dam was inaugurated, in 1928, with a ceremony in which the then head of the Italian government Benito Mussolini participated [7] . At the time of the inauguration the reservoir was capable of containing twelfth 000 000  m³ of water [5] .

The dam, made in concrete, was heavily influenced by the fascist stylistic features in vogue during the construction era; In particular, the front, characterized by multiple levels of multiple arches equipped with spurs, can be ascribed to the canons of monumentalism [7] . The lateral walls were made of massive gravity, the maximum height was of 55,3 m [8] , while the length was of 180 m at the base e 322 m on the top.

Between 1990 and 2006 the dam was subjected to some interventions aimed at adapting the structure, including the restoration of the concrete parts, the rehabilitation of existing discharges and the realization ex new of some surface exhausts [9] .

Between 2016 and 2019, the Piacenza reclamation consortium, the owner of the dam, led a series of restoration works of the artifact, for a total amount of € 4 million, aimed at the SPONDALE Consolidation of Tidone stream near the survey, to a better management of the output water flows and the strengthening of the containment capacities: the works allowed to increase the capacity of the survey from 7 600 000  m³ a 8 600 000  m³ [5] [ten] .
