The subway station, located in the city center in the city center, is served by lines 12 and 15 of the Cologne transport company. It was opened in 1987 and has two tracks. As early as 1877, Cologne’s first horse tram was running here. With the grinding of the city wall and the layout of the ring road from 1881, today’s square was created. He is named after the first Roman-German king of the Habsburg house, Rudolf I. In the tram network, the Rudolfplatz was always important as a hub to link the routes along the rings and Aachener Stra\u00dfe. In the 1980s, a tunnel was built along the rings to create additional space on the surface. The tunnel and with it the Rudolfplatz underground station were opened on October 31, 1987. The above -ground stop in the course of Aachener Stra\u00dfe was rebuilt in 1995 to ensure a barrier -free entry into the new Niederflurstrasse. The subway station includes a platform level with a distribution level above. From the distribution level, stairs lead to the stops of the city railway lines that run above ground. The platforms are located out of town on the Hahnentor on Aachener Strasse, the inland on Richard Wagner-Stra\u00dfe. The KVB buses also stop at the same platforms. There are public toilets, a kiosk and a standing caf\u00e9 at the distribution level. The individual levels of the subway station are connected by escalators, solid stairs and two elevators. The entire station is colored in accordance with the Cologne standard at the time, whereby the design is already a bit more complex compared to the older buildings. On the platform north there is a ceiling breakthrough into the distribution level. In this area, the wall is mirrored and provided with a stylized city gate. The platforms are 35 centimeters above the rail top, but the station is designed for operation with 90 centimeters high light rail cars. Therefore, all escalators end at this height, the actual platform level is reached by three further stages. With the permanent conversion of the rings lines to low-floor operation, a platform increase is no longer planned. The statics of the stop structure are prepared for a later crossing through an east-west city railway, there are no concrete construction work.
