Athletes of the year (Germany) – Wikipedia
Since 1947, German sports journalists, initially in the four Allied occupation zones, voted the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 at the end of the year deutsche Athlete of the year or the Sportsman of the year . Since 1957 there is also one Team of the year determined that since 1964 a Athlete of the year valued separately. This election was initiated by Kurt Dobbratz, founder of the SportsPresse agency International Sport-correspondence, which is still responsible as an organizer today. Since 1998, the proclamation has been transferred from the Kurhaus Baden-Baden by ZDF, the two years before by the ARD.
In contrast to the Federal Republic, an athlete’s election (see athlete of the year (GDR)) took place in the GDR as part of a reader survey by the daily newspaper. A GDR athlete of the year was first determined in 1958, and from 1959 a GDR team of the year. In 1990 the first joint choice of the Sportsman of the year .
In individual sports there are also elections for the outstanding athlete of this sport, in Germany the basketball players of the year, players of the year of the basketball Bundesliga, beach volleyball player of the year, footballer of the year, handball player of the year, athletes of the year and cyclists of the year are Volleyballer of the year honored. The coaches of the year have also been awarded since 2006, and the award is made by the German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB).
As part of the award for the athletes of the year, the Sparkasse award for role models in sports is also awarded.
Since the beginning of television transmission, the following people have led through the program:

Ulrike Nasse-Meyfarth was chosen four times in a row (1981–1984), which afterwards only Steffi Graf (1986–1989) succeeded, who at ten years also has the greatest time difference as a single athlete between two honors (1989 and 1999). With Hans Günter Winkler, the active 13 years were between two honors (1956 as a single athlete and 1969 as a member of the Springreiter-Equipe). At Berti Vogts it was even 26 years between the election as an active team of the German national soccer team (1970) and the election as their coach (1996).
So far, athletes have managed four times in one year to be elected both alone and in the team: 1976 Gregor Braun, 1985 Boris Becker, 1997 Jan Ullrich and 1999 Martin Schmitt and once an athlete: 1987 Steffi Graf. The Fed Cup team was also the first pure women’s team in 1987 to be elected as a team of the year.
A curiosity is also the choice of Ria Baran-Falk, who was voted athlete of the year in 1951 both the athlete of the year and with her husband Paul Falk.
The Olympic champion Ingrid Krämer from Dresden was elected in 1960 both in the Federal Republic and in the GDR. With Katrin Krabbe, an athlete from the new federal states was also elected in 1990 in the year of reunification. Heike Drechsler, elected in 2000, was already athlete of the year in the GDR in 1986.
While in 1964 with Roswitha Esser and Annemarie Zimmermann two athletes were elected who were active together in the Kajak-Zweier, in 1966 two athletes with the same number of points were elected to first place with Helga Hoffmann and Karin Frisch.
In 1961 Wolfgang Graf Berthe was elected to athlete of the year.
The youngest individual award winners were Wiltrud Urselmann in 1957 at the age of 15 among women and Boris Becker in 1985 at the age of 18. The oldest individual award winners were Karl Kling in 1952 among men and Birgit Fischer in 2004 for women at 42.
In 2011, a team athlete was awarded Dirk Nowitzki as an athlete of the year. Nowitzki had already finished second in 2005. The appointment as athlete of the year 2011 is Nowitzki’s second award, after the men’s German national basketball team was elected as the team of the year in 2005.
