The governor appoints the chief minister, whose council of ministers are collectively responsible to the assembly. The chief minister’s term is for five years and is subject to no term limits, given that he has the confidence of the assembly.[1]The state of Gujarat was created on 1 May 1960, composed of the Gujarati-speaking districts of Bombay State following the Mahagujarat Movement.[2]Jivraj Narayan Mehta of the INC was the inaugural chief minister. Narendra Modi of the BJP is the longest serving chief minister for twelve and a half years from 2001 to 2014. He resigned in 2014 to become the 14th prime minister of India. He was succeeded by Anandiben Patel who became the state’s first woman chief minister. The current chief minister is Bhupendrabhai Patel of the BJP. He was elected for the post following the resignation of then incumbent Vijay Rupani, who was in the office since 7 August 2016.[3] (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4Chief Ministers of Gujarat[edit]NoPortraitNameConstituencyTerm of officeAssembly(election)Party[a]1Jivraj Narayan MehtaAmreli1 May 19603 March 19622 years, 300 days1st/Interim(1957 election)Indian National Congress3 March 196225 February 19632nd(1962 election)2Balwantrai MehtaBhavnagar25 February 196319 September 19652 years, 206 days3Hitendra Kanaiyalal DesaiOlpad19 September 19653 April 19675 years, 245 days3 April 196712 May 19713rd(1967 election)Indian National Congress (O)–Vacant[b](President’s rule)N/A13 May 197117 March 1972309 daysDissolvedN/A4Ghanshyam OzaDahegam17 March 197217 July 19731 year, 122 days4th(1972 election)Indian National Congress5Chimanbhai PatelSankheda17 July 19739 February 1974207 days–Vacant[b](President’s rule)N/A9 February 197418 June 19751 year, 129 daysDissolvedN/A6Babubhai PatelSabarmati18 June 197512 March 1976268 days5th(1975 election)Indian National Congress (O)–Vacant[b](President’s rule)N/A12 March 197624 December 1976287 daysN/A7Madhav Singh SolankiBhadran24 December 197610 April 1977107 daysIndian National Congress(6)Babubhai PatelSabarmati11 April 197717 February 19802 years, 312 daysJanata Party–Vacant[b](President’s rule)N/A17 February 19806 June 1980110 daysN/A(7)Madhav Singh SolankiBhadran7 June 198010 March 19855 years, 29 days6th(1980 election)Indian National Congress11 March 19856 July 19857th (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4(1985 election)8Amarsinh ChaudharyVyara6 July 19859 December 19894 years, 156 days(7)Madhav Singh SolankiBhadran10 December 19893 March 199083 days(5)Chimanbhai PatelSankheda4 March 199025 October 19903 years, 350 days8th(1990 election)Janata Dal25 October 199017 February 1994Indian National Congress9Chhabildas MehtaMahuva17 February 199413 March 19951 year, 24 days10Keshubhai PatelVisavadar14 March 199521 October 1995221 days9th(1995 election)Bharatiya Janata Party11Suresh MehtaMandvi21 October 199519 September 1996334 days–Vacant[b](President’s rule)N/A19 September 199623 October 199627 daysN/A12Shankersinh VaghelaRadhanpur23 October 199627 October 19971 year, 4 daysRashtriya Janata Party13Dilip ParikhDhandhuka28 October 19974 March 1998188 days(10)Keshubhai PatelVisavadar4 March 19986 October 20013 years, 216 days10th(1998 election)Bharatiya Janata Party14Narendra ModiRajkot II7 October 200122 December 200212 years, 227 daysManinagar22 December 200222 December 200711th(2002 election)23 December 200720 December 201212th(2007 election)20 December 201222 May 201413th(2012 election)15Anandiben PatelGhatlodia22 May 20147 August 20162 years, 77 days16Vijay RupaniRajkot West7 August 201626 December 20175 years, 37 days26 December 201713 September 202114th(2017 election)17Bhupendrabhai PatelGhatlodia13 September 202112 December 20221 year, 192 days12 December 2022Incumbent15th(2022 election)Statistics[edit]List of chief ministers by length of term#NamePartyLength of termLongest continuous termTotal term in the office1Narendra ModiBJP12 years, 227 days12 years, 227 days2Hitendra Kanaiyalal DesaiINC & INC(O)5 years, 245 days5 years, 245 days3Madhav Singh SolankiINC5 years, 29 days5 years, 219 days4Vijay RupaniBJP5 years, 37 days5 years, 37 days5Chimanbhai PatelINC & JD3 years, 350 days4 years, 192 days6Amarsinh ChaudharyINC4 years, 156 days4 years, 156 days7Keshubhai PatelBJP3 years, 216 days4 years, 72 days8Babubhai PatelINC(O) & JP2 years, 312 days3 years, 215 days9Jivraj Narayan MehtaINC3 years, 141 days3 years, 141 days10Anandiben PatelBJP2 years, 77 days2 years, 77 days11Balwantrai MehtaINC2 years, 0 days2 years, 0 days12Bhupendrabhai PatelBJP1 year, 192 days1 year, 192 days13Ghanshyam OzaINC1 years, 122 days1 years, 122 days14Chhabildas MehtaINC1 years, 24 days1 years, 24 days15Shankersinh VaghelaRJP1 years, 4 days1 years, 4 days16Suresh MehtaBJP334 days334 days17Dilip ParikhRJP188 days188 daysList by partyTimelineFootnotes^ This column only names the chief minister’s party. The state government he heads may be a complex coalition of several parties and independents; these are not listed here.^ a b c d e President’s rule may be imposed when the “government in a state is not able to function as per the Constitution”, which often happens because no party or coalition has a majority in the assembly. When President’s rule is in force in a state, its council of ministers stands dissolved. The office of chief minister thus lies vacant, and the administration is taken over by the governor, who functions on behalf of the central government. At times, the legislative assembly also stands dissolved.[4]ReferencesExternal links[edit] (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4"},{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"BreadcrumbList
@type":"ListItem
@id":"https://wiki.edu.vn/en/#breadcrumbitem
Enzyklopädie"}},{"@type":"ListItem
@id":"https://wiki.edu.vn/en/list-of-chief-ministers-of-gujarat/#breadcrumbitem
List of chief ministers of Gujarat"}}]}]
