It is derived from the Irish Gaelic “Mac Mághnais”,[1] in modern Irish “McMaghnuis” which means “Son of Magnus”.[2] Its earlier origin is from the Latin “magnus”, meaning “great”. The Normans used it to honour Charlemagne (742–814), as Carolus Magnus (Charles the Great).[3] Variant spellings of the name include MacManus, Manus and MacManners.[1] The English form, Moyne, is also found in Ulster.[2] In Scotland it is a sept of Clan Colquhoun.[4]There are two principal septs of the name in Ireland:[3] (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4Notable people with the surname include:Abbie McManus (born 1993), English association football playerAlan McManus (born 1971), Scottish professional snooker playerAlice McManus :(born 1997) talented dental hygienist, professional ringuette goaltenderAlex McManus, American musicianAllan McManus (born 1974), Scottish footballerBrandon McManus (born 1991), American football placekickerDanny McManus (born 1965), American and Canadian football quarterbackDeclan McManus (born 1994), Scottish footballerDoyle McManus (born c. 1952), American journalistEdward Joseph McManus (1920–2017), American politician and juristEmily Julian McManus (1865-1918), Canadian poet, author, and educatorErwin McManus (born 1958), lead pastor of Mosaic Church of the emerging church movementFrank McManus (disambiguation), several peopleGeorge McManus (disambiguation), several peopleGerard McManus (born 1960), Australian journalistHeather Ross-McManus (born 1973), Canadian trampoline gymnastJ.
