Unlike the Supreme Court, where one justice is specifically nominated to be chief, the office of chief judge rotates among the district court judges. To be chief, a judge must have been in active service on the court for at least one year, be under the age of 65, and have not previously served as chief judge. A vacancy is filled by the judge highest in seniority among the group of qualified judges. The chief judge serves for a term of seven years or until age 70, whichever occurs first. The age restrictions are waived if no members of the court would otherwise be qualified for the position.When the office was created in 1948, the chief judge was the longest-serving judge who had not elected to retire on what has since 1958 been known as senior status or declined to serve as chief judge. After August 6, 1959, judges could not become or remain chief after turning 70 years old. The current rules have been in operation since October 1, 1982.Succession of seats[edit]Seat 2Seat established on September 14, 1922 by 42 Stat. 837 (temporary)Kennamer1924–1925Seat reassigned to Northern District and made permanent on February 16, 1925 by 43 Stat. 945Seat 3Seat established on June 22, 1936 by 49 Stat. 1804 (concurrent with Northern and Western Districts)Murrah1937–1940Broaddus1940–1949Wallace1950–1960Bohanon1961–1974Cook1974–1992Burrage1994–2001Payne2001–2017Heil III2020–presentSeat 4Seat established on May 19, 1961 by 75 Stat. 80 (concurrent with Northern and Western Districts)Daugherty1962–1982Russell1981–1990Seat reassigned solely to Western District on December 1, 1990 by 104 Stat. 5089See also[edit]References[edit]External links[edit]District courtsAlabama (M, N, S)AlaskaArizonaArkansas (E, W)California (C, E, N, S)ColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFlorida (M, N, S)Georgia (M, N, S)HawaiiIdahoIllinois (C, N, S)Indiana (N, S)Iowa (N, S)KansasKentucky (E, W)Louisiana (E, M, W)MaineMarylandMassachusettsMichigan (E, W)MinnesotaMississippi (N, S)Missouri (E, W)MontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew York (E, N, S, W)North Carolina (E, M, W)North DakotaOhio (N, S)Oklahoma (E, N, W)OregonPennsylvania (E, M, W)Puerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennessee (E, M, W)Texas (E, N, S, W)UtahVermontVirginia (E, W)Washington (E, W)West Virginia (N, S)Wisconsin (E, W)WyomingTerritorial courtsExtinct courtsNoteCoordinates: 35°45′01″N 95°22′28″W / 35.75020°N 95.37439°W / 35.75020; -95.37439 (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4"},{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"BreadcrumbList
@type":"ListItem
@id":"https://wiki.edu.vn/en/#breadcrumbitem
Enzyklopädie"}},{"@type":"ListItem
@id":"https://wiki.edu.vn/en/united-states-district-court-for-the-eastern-district-of-oklahoma/#breadcrumbitem
United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma"}}]}]
