A.F.P. Harcourt, Assistant Commissioner, Kooloo (Kullu) Sub-Division, reported that Losur (Losar) village was the first human habitation on the Spiti River. Located on NH-505, 58 kilometres (36\u00a0mi) from Kaza, Himachal Pradesh[3] and 78 kilometres (48\u00a0mi) from Gramphoo.[4] It  covers an area of 360 hectares (890 acres) and is at an elevation of 4,090 metres (13,420\u00a0ft).[5][6]:\u200a212\u200a The forested area in the village is 61.9\u00a0ha (153 acres).[6]:\u200a220\u200aClimate[edit]During his expedition in 1868, Harcourt observed the climate of Spiti was drier and colder than Lahaul, rainfall was very infrequent, beyond the influence of the monsoons. Days were hot in summer but nights cold. The strong winds abraded the exposed skin. [2]:\u200a181\u200aDemographics[edit]The population of Losar Khas as of the 2011 Census was 320 in 65 households.[6]:\u200a212\u200a Of these, 166 persons or 51.95% are female, and 57 persons or 17.8% are in the age group 0-6.[7]:\u200a86\u200aScheduled Tribes comprise about 99.1% of the population.[7]:\u200a87\u200a  The main religions are Buddhism and Hinduism.[6]:\u200a14\u200a  The main language is Bhoti.[6]:\u200a62\u200a The literacy rate in 2011 was 71.9%, with male literacy higher at 77.9% and female literacy lower at 66.3%.[7]:\u200a88\u200aTransport[edit]Losar is served by public and private bus services along NH-505.  Taxis and vans are available for hire.[6]:\u200a215\u200aAgriculture[edit]In 1868, Harcourt observed that the soil in Spiti yielded only one crop a year. Sowing took place in May and the harvest in September with mainly Yak used for ploughing. The main crops of the region were a fine hexagonal wheat, peas, mustard and two kinds of barley. There was no fruit.Irrigation was done using long channels winding along the terrain, often for many miles, from streams.[2]:\u200a182\u200aAmenities[edit]Losar has a Branch Post Office (Delivery Office) with pincode 172114.[8]As of the 2011 Census, Losar has a primary school.
