Its first entry was the 1950 qualifiers tournament, but withdrew from qualification. Ecuador did not enter the 1954 and 1958 tournaments. From 1962 to 1998, Ecuador failed to qualify for the world’s premier football tournament. They earned their first qualification in 2002 after finishing 2nd in South America. The qualification for the second tournament in 2006 was achieved after finishing 3rd in South America. Ecuador finished 6th in South America but did not qualify for a third consecutive World Cup qualification tournament. Ecuador returned at the 2014 qualifier edition before they were eliminated from 2018 edition.YearPosition1930did not enter193419381950Withdrew[1]1954did not enter195819622 in Group 12002311−80[2]19663 in Group 34103410−62[3]19703 in Group 3401328−61[4]19743 in Group 1402238−52[5]19783 in Group 3401319−81[6]19822 in Group 3411225−33[7]19863 in Group 24013411−71[8]19903 in Group 2411245−13[9]19944 in Group 281347705[10]19986166372221+121[11]20022189452320+331[12]20063188462319+428[13]20106186572226−423[14]20144167452016+425[15]201881862102629−32020224187562719+826TotalN/A161543869194218−24–World Cup record[edit]Although Ecuador has advanced past the group stage only once, nonetheless they have managed to win at least one match in each tournament they participated in. Ecuador were drawn into Group G, alongside Mexico, Italy, and Croatia.Ecuador made a losing World Cup debut against worldpowers Italy, falling 2–0 by courtesy of a Christian Vieri double. Their next match against Mexico went better, but ended in their 2–1 defeat. Agustín Delgado scored for Ecuador’s first ever World Cup goal and put them ahead, but goals from Jared Borgetti and Gerardo Torrado canceled the early strike and effectively eliminated them from the tournament. A second-half goal from Édison Méndez did seal a 1–0 consolation win in the final match against Croatia. Although they finished the tournament last in their group, they managed to eliminate Croatia, previous third-place in 1998 World Cup, from the competition.Final Group G standingsTeam Mexico321042+27 Italy311143+14 Croatia310223−13 Ecuador310224−23Squad statistics[16]NumPosPlayerDate of birth (age)ClubMinutes playedITAMEXCROTotal1GKJosé Francisco Cevallos (1971-04-17)April 17, 1971 (aged 31) Barcelona9090902702DFAugusto Porozo (1974-04-13)April 13, 1974 (aged 28) Emelec9090902703DFIván Hurtado (1974-08-16)August 16, 1974 (aged 27) Barcelona9090902704DFUlises de la Cruz (1974-02-08)February 8, 1974 (aged 28) Hibernian9090902705MFAlfonso Obregón (1972-05-12)May 12, 1972 (aged 30) LDU Quito9058401886DFRaúl Guerrón (1976-10-12)October 12, 1976 (aged 25) Deportivo Quito9090902707MFNicolás Asencio (1975-04-26)April 26, 1975 (aged 27) Barcelona50058DFLuis Gómez (1972-04-20)April 20, 1972 (aged 30) Barcelona00009FWIván Kaviedes (1977-10-24)October 24, 1977 (aged 24) Barcelona053146710MFÁlex Aguinaga (1968-07-09)July 9, 1968 (aged 33) Necaxa45325012711FWAgustín Delgado (1974-12-23)December 23, 1974 (aged 27) Southampton90909027012GKOswaldo Ibarra (1969-09-08)September 8, 1969 (aged 32) El Nacional000013FWÁngel Fernández (1971-08-02)August 2, 1971 (aged 30) El Nacional000014MFJuan Carlos Burbano (1969-02-15)February 15, 1969 (aged 33) El Nacional000015DFMarlon Ayoví (1971-09-27)September 27, 1971 (aged 30) Deportivo Quito31559017616MFCléber Chalá (1971-06-29)June 29, 1971 (aged 30) El Nacional85909026517DFGiovanny Espinoza (1977-04-12)April 12, 1977 (aged 25) Aucas000018MFCarlos Tenorio (1979-05-14)May 14, 1979 (aged 23) LDU Quito45377615819MFÉdison Méndez (1979-03-16)March 16, 1979 (aged 23) Deportivo Quito90909027020MFEdwin Tenorio (1976-06-16)June 16, 1976 (aged 25) Barcelona593509421MFWellington Sánchez (1974-06-19)June 19, 1974 (aged 27) Emelec000022GKDaniel Viteri (1981-12-12)December 12, 1981 (aged 20) Emelec000023MFWalter Ayoví (1979-08-11)August 11, 1979 (aged 22) Emelec0000Manager: Hernán Darío Gómez2006 FIFA World Cup[edit]Ecuador qualified for their second FIFA World Cup by finishing third in the CONMEBOL qualification tournament.
