There is a bridging cis-hyponitrite group in the red dinuclear form of nitrosyl pentammine cobalt(III) chloride, [Co(NH3)5NO]Cl2.[4]Hyponitrite can act as a reducing agent for example reducing iodine:[4]N2O2\u22122 + 3 I2 + 3 H2O \u2192 NO\u22123 + NO\u22122 + 6 HIHyponitrite esters[edit]Organic trans-hyponitrites R1\u2212O\u2212N=N\u2212O\u2212R2 can be obtained by reacting trans silver(I) hyponitrite Ag2N2O2 with various alkyl halides.
