Mu\u1e25ammad (al-Ath\u012br) b. Mu\u1e25ammad b. \u02bfAbd al-Kar\u012bm b. \u02bfAbd al-W\u0101\u1e25id al-Shayb\u0101n\u012b al-Jazar\u012b al-Maw\u1e63il\u012b.[4][5]Majd ad-D\u012bn was one of three brothers from a wealthy family of scholars, all known as Ibn al-Ath\u012br of Jazirat Ibn \u2018Umar and Mosul. The other two being Ali ibn al-Athir and Diy\u0101’ ad-D\u012bn, who was also an historian. The father Mu\u1e25ammad b. \u2018Abd al-Karim was an official of the Zangid government. Majd al-D\u012bn was in the service of the emir of Mosul, Gh\u0101zi b. Mawd\u016bd, and later Mas\u2018\u016bd b. Mawd\u016bd and Arslan Sh\u0101h. Although he became paralysed he continued working and outlived his two brothers. He was a distinguished translator of the Arabic language. The Ibn al-Ath\u012br family were Arab, or Kurdish, of the Shayban lineage[6] of the large and influential Arab tribe Banu Bakr,[7][8] who lived across upper Mesopotamia, and gave their name to the city of Diyar Bakr.[9][10]Al-Nih\u0101ya fi gharib al-\u1e25ad\u012bth; compiled in 1322.
