It is part of the Helgeland region. The administrative centre of the island municipality is the village of Solfjellsj\u00f8en. Other villages include Bj\u00f8rn, D\u00f8nnes, Hestad, Sand\u00e5ker, and Vandve. The main island of D\u00f8nna is connected to the neighboring municipality of Her\u00f8y to the south by the \u00c5kviksundet Bridge.The 193-square-kilometre (75\u00a0sq\u00a0mi) municipality is the 304th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. D\u00f8nna is the 306th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 1,369. The new municipality was created by merging these areas:the municipality of Nordvik (population: 1,293)the part of the municipality of Her\u00f8y on the southern tip of the island of D\u00f8nna (population: 19)the part of the municipality of Nesna on the island L\u00f8kta (population: 80)the majority of the municipality of D\u00f8nnes (population: 1,348), except for the part located on the island of Tomma.The borders of D\u00f8nna municipality have not changed since that time.[5]Name[edit]The municipality is named after the island of D\u00f8nna (Old Norse: Dyn). The name is probably derived from the Norse verb dynja which means to “rumble” or “roar” (referring to the swell of the waves on the island).[6]Coat of arms[edit]The coat of arms was granted on 29 May 1981. The official blazon is “Or a schnecke azure from base sinister to dexter” (Norwegian: Delt av gull og bl\u00e5tt ved virvelsnitt). This means the arms have a field (background) that is divided by a line called a schnecke (a swirling clockwise spiral design that is looks like a wave). The field located above the line has a tincture of Or which means it is commonly colored yellow, but if it is made out of metal, then gold is used. The tincture below the line is blue.The arms are a canting symbol for the municipality since the Norwegian word d\u00f8nning means “wave” or “swell”. The arms were designed by Odd Fjordholm.[7][8][9]Churches[edit]The Church of Norway has one parish (sokn) within the municipality of D\u00f8nna. It is part of the Nord-Helgeland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of S\u00f8r-H\u00e5logaland.Economy[edit]Much of the industry focuses on fishing, aquaculture, and fish processing. There is also some agriculture, tourism, and some public services.Government[edit]All municipalities in Norway, including D\u00f8nna, are responsible for primary education (through 10th grade), outpatient health services, senior citizen services, unemployment and other social services, zoning, economic development, and municipal roads. The municipality is governed by a municipal council of elected representatives, which in turn elect a mayor.[10]  The municipality falls under the Alstahaug District Court and the H\u00e5logaland Court of Appeal.Municipal council[edit]The municipal council (Kommunestyre) of D\u00f8nna is made up of 17 representatives that are elected to four year terms. The municipality is made up of a large archipelago consisting of islands, islets, and reefs. The three largest islands in the municipality are D\u00f8nna, L\u00f8kta, and Vandve. The \u00c5sv\u00e6ret islands (and the \u00c5sv\u00e6r Lighthouse) lie in the western part of the municipality.
