The board then appointed Peter Reid as temporary manager, in the hopes of keeping the Black Cats clear of relegation. That objective was achieved within weeks, and Reid was rewarded with a permanent contract.Final league table[edit]Results[edit]Sunderland’s score comes first[1] (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4Legend[edit][edit]DateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceScorers13 August 1994Bristol CityA0–011,12720 August 1994MillwallH1–117,296Goodman27 August 1994Stoke CityA1–015,159P Gray30 August 1994Grimsby TownH2–215,788Goodman (pen), P Gray3 September 1994Wolverhampton WanderersH1–115,111P Gray11 September 1994MiddlesbroughA2–219,578Russell (2)13 September 1994Sheffield UnitedA0–015,23917 September 1994BarnsleyH2–016,145P Gray, Goodman24 September 1994Tranmere RoversA0–17,5001 October 1994Southend UnitedH0–115,5208 October 1994West Bromwich AlbionA3–113,717Smith, P Gray (2)15 October 1994BurnleyH0–017,70022 October 1994ReadingA2–010,757Melville, P Gray29 October 1994Oldham AthleticH0–017,2521 November 1994Charlton AthleticH1–114,085Smith5 November 1994Notts CountyA2–38,890P Gray, Owers19 November 1994WatfordH1–315,063Smith26 November 1994PortsmouthA4–17,527Russell, Melville, P Gray (pen), Smith29 November 1994Port ValeA0–08,1213 December 1994ReadingH0–114,02110 December 1994MillwallA0–27,69817 December 1994Bristol CityH2–011,661Howey (2)26 December 1994Bolton WanderersH1–119,758Smith27 December 1994Luton TownA0–38,95331 December 1994Derby CountyH1–113,979P Gray14 January 1995Oldham AthleticA0–09,74221 January 1995Notts CountyH1–214,334Armstrong4 February 1995Port ValeH1–113,377Ball11 February 1995Charlton AthleticA0–112,38018 February 1995PortsmouthH2–212,372Smith (2)21 February 1995WatfordA1–08,189Russell25 February 1995Southend UnitedA1–04,686Agnew5 March 1995Tranmere RoversH0–112,0438 March 1995Wolverhampton WanderersA0–125,82611 March 1995Stoke CityH1–012,282Melville15 March 1995Swindon TownA0–18,23319 March 1995Grimsby TownA1–35,697Agnew21 March 1995MiddlesbroughH0–116,50124 March 1995BarnsleyA0–27,8031 April 1995Sheffield UnitedH1–017,259Russell8 April 1995Derby CountyA1–015,442Ball15 April 1995Luton TownH1–117,292P Gray17 April 1995Bolton WanderersA0–115,03022 April 1995Swindon TownH1–016,874Smith29 April 1995BurnleyA1–115,121Smith7 May 1995West Bromwich AlbionH2–218,232Smith, P GrayFA Cup[edit]League Cup[edit]RoundDateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceGoalscorersR2 First Leg21 September 1994MillwallA1–25,095RussellR2 Second Leg4 October 1994MillwallH1–1 (lost 2–3 on agg)9,698P GrayPlayers[edit]First-team squad[edit]Squad at end of season[2]Note: Flags indicate national team as defined under FIFA eligibility rules.
