It finished with the final examination called Reifeprüfung /Abitur (A-Level) at the end of the 12th grade, granting the Reifezeugnis, the certificate of eligibility for university entrance. The school structure was a four-class comprehensive school without any internal or external differentiation. The EOS was established in 1959 to replace the hitherto existing Oberschule as laid down by the Act on Socialistic Development of the School System in the German Democratic Republic effective December 2, 1959. The designation Gymnasium was not common in East Germany.Table of ContentsHistory of the EOS[edit]School organization[edit]Compulsory teaching and school life[edit]Tables of lessons[edit]Transitory table of lessons 1959[edit]Standard table of lessons 1961[edit]Standard table of lessons 1982[edit]The Reifeprüfung[edit]The exams 1960-1968[edit]The exams 1969-1990[edit]References[edit]History of the EOS[edit]This section is empty. Like for the Polytechnic Secondary Schools there was one uniform, systemic curriculum, also mandatory for all extended secondary schools. One lesson lasted 45 minutes and students went to school six days a week, from Monday to Saturday. On Saturdays, there were approximately five to six lessons.Transitory table of lessons 1959[edit]This table of lessons was effective until the reform of the existing Oberschule was finished and the newly established extended secondary schools were fully operational under the altered conditions.[1]A-branchB-branchC-branchgrade910111291011129101112Compulsory teachingGerman language and literature544454445443Russian language3333333333332nd foreign language5454233364443rd foreign language−444−−−−−487Mathematics333354653333Physics222233332222Chemistry111223331112Biology222222332222Geography2211221122–−Astronomy−−−−−−−−−−–−Technical drawing11––11––11–−Technical studies and productive work444444444444History222322232223Politics111111111111Arts111111111111Music111111111111Physical education222222222222Sum of compulsory lessons353736373636373736373838Elective teaching−−−−−−−−−−−−Standard table of lessons 1961[edit]Compulsory teaching had to follow this standard table of lessons when the transformation process was finished and all requirements could be met by the school, for instance, the number of teachers, number of educators, teaching equipment and so forth.A-branchB-branchC-branchgrade910111291011129101112Compulsory teachingGerman language and literature444444445434Russian language5333333333332nd foreign language5444333364443rd foreign language−455−−−−−667Mathematics333355543333Physics222133332221Chemistry222123332121Biology11122232211−Geography211−2211211−Astronomy−−−1−−−1−−–1Technical drawing11––11––11–−Technical studies and productive work444444443344History222322232223Politics111111111111Arts111111111111Music111111111111Physical education222222222222Sum of compulsory lessons363636363636363636363636Elective teaching−−−−−−−−−−−−Standard table of lessons 1982[edit]Starting in 1982 EOS incorporated 11th and 12th grade only. The Reifeprüfung[edit]The exams 1960-1968[edit]This section is empty.
