After her acting debut in 1994, Hwang became famous for her role as the quiet and classic beauty Lady Ye-jin in the tremendously popular period drama series Hur Jun in 1999, which reached average ratings of 54%, and a peak rating of 63.7%.[1] She claimed the two top honors at the MBC Drama Awards in 2000 for best actress and favorite actress.[2]However, in 2001, she was arrested on charges of taking methamphetamine (a stimulant also known as “philopon” or “ice”), with her live-in lover, a married man. She was sentenced to one year and six months in jail, but was released on bail after serving 78 days in 2002.[3][4] The drug scandal tarnished her “pure” image; broadcasters and advertisers were quick to scrap contracts, and to dodge a public lynching in the media, Hwang withdrew from the public eye for five years.[2]In 2006, Hwang made her comeback by appearing in the music video “Because Love is Always Like That” by WAX,[5][6][7] then resumed her acting career with a leading role in the 2007 TV drama Salt Doll.[2][8] Though she never recovered the popularity she had once enjoyed, Hwang has since starred in the Hong Sang-soo film Night and Day (2008),[9][10] the four-episode Drama Special For My Son (2011),[1][3] and the omnibus movie In Between (2012).[11][12]Table of ContentsFilmography[edit]Film[edit]Television series[edit]Music video[edit]References[edit]External links[edit]Filmography[edit]Film[edit]In Between (segment “A Time to Leave”, 2012)A Friend in Need aka Yeouido (2010)Night and Day (2008)A+ Life (1999)Television series[edit]Drama Special “For My Son” (KBS2, 2011)Salt Doll (SBS, 2007)Four Sisters (MBC, 2001)Mothers and Sisters (MBC, 2000-2001)Hur Jun (MBC, 1999-2000)Springtime aka Days of Youth (MBC, 1999)Romance (SBS, 1998)I Only Know Love (MBC, 1998-2000)White Christmas (SBS, 1997-1998)Tears of Roses (SBS, 1997)Today, For Some Reason (KBS, 1997)When Salmon Returns (SBS, 1996-1997)Thaw (SBS, 1995)Chilgapsan (SBS, 1995)My Son’s Woman (MBC, 1994-1995)Music video[edit]WAX – “Because Love is Always Like That” (2006)References[edit]External links[edit]Awards for Hwang Soo-jung1990s2000sHwang In-young, Kim Min-hee and Kim Yoo-mi (2000)Gong Hyo-jin, Lee Yoo-jin and Lee Ji-hyun (2001)Han Eun-jung, Kim Jung-hwa, Kim Min-jung, Lee Yo-won, Park Sol-mi and Sung Yu-ri (2002)Choi Jung-won, Kim Tae-hee, Park Han-byul, Shin Min-a, So Yi-hyun and Yoo Min (2003)Eugene, Jeong Da-bin and Jo An (2004)Yoon Se-ah, Yoon Jung-hee, Lee Bo-young and Hyun Young (2005)Go Ara, Lee Ha-na, Claudia Kim, Yoon Ji-min and Park Si-yeon (2006)Choi Yeo-jin, Koo Hye-sun, Lee Ji-hyun, Lee Young-eun and Wang Bit-na (2007)Cha Ye-ryun, Chae Young-in, Han Hyo-joo, Im Jung-eun, Moon Chae-won and Yoon So-yi (2008)Park Shin-hye, Son Dam-bi, Lee Min-jung, Lee So-yeon and Lee Tae-im (2009)2010sHahm Eun-jung, Han Chae-ah, Hwang Jung-eum and Nam Gyu-ri (2010)Goo Hara, Im Soo-hyang, Jin Se-yeon, Jeong Yu-mi, Seo Hyo-rim, Shin Hyun-been and Wang Ji-hye (2011)Go Joon-hee, Kwon Yu-ri, Park Hyo-joo, Park Se-young , Sulli and Yoon Jin-yi (2012)Jeong Eun-ji, Kang So-ra, Kim Ji-won, Kim So-hyun, Kim Yoo-ri and Lee Da-hee (2013)Han Sun-hwa, Han Groo, Lee Yu-bi, Nam Bo-ra and Kim Yoo-jung (2014)Gong Seung-yeon, Go Ah-sung, Lee Yul-eum, Lee Elijah and Lim Ji-yeon (2015)Lee Hye-ri, Bang Min-ah, Moon Ji-in and Yang Jin-sung (2016)Kim Da-som (2017)Lee Yoo-young (2018)Go Min-si and Keum Sae-rok (2019)2020sFrom 2001 to 2016, it was the New Star Award.
