It was compiled by Vietnamese historian Tr\u1ea7n Tr\u1ecdng Kim. It covered the period from H\u1ed3ng B\u00e0ng dynasty to the time of French Indochina. The book was first published in 1920 and reprinted many times. It was the standard history text in South Vietnam.[1] It was often criticised by Communist historians, who argued with Kim’s interpretation of the T\u00e2y S\u01a1n Rebellion and the reign of H\u1ed3 Qu\u00fd Ly.[2] Both of these were heroes to the Communists, but condemned by mainstream historians. Vietnamese emperors were supper rulers of the French and had little actual power. Vietnam was facing an uncertain future. Tr\u1ea7n Tr\u1ecdng Kim believed that if the Vietnamese people knew their own history, they would be patriotic and contribute to the growth of Vietnam.However, all historical texts were written in Classical Chinese. The use of Classical Chinese (Vietnamese: H\u00e1n v\u0103n; ch\u1eef H\u00e1n: \u6f22\u6587), died out in Vietnam early in the 20th century. Tr\u1ea7n Tr\u1ecdng Kim was concerned that if one day most of Vietnamese people could not read ch\u1eef H\u00e1n, the national history would be forgotten.
