By the time that quarter had ended, Georgia Southern had fought back to tie the score, 28\u201328. The two teams traded touchdowns in the first half of the fourth quarter, remaining tied, 35\u201335. A Georgia Southern field goal was answered by a Furman touchdown, giving Furman a 42\u201338 lead with just over two minutes to play.
