Following the election, Browne became the country’s youngest Prime Minister.Table of ContentsBackground[edit]Electoral system[edit]Campaign[edit]Results[edit]By constituency[edit]Reactions[edit]Government formation[edit]References[edit]Background[edit]After a long delay due to a pending Court order about a boundary change which would have affected the parliamentary seats, on 15 May 2014 the Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer set the election day.[2]Electoral system[edit]The 17 elected members of the House of Representatives were elected in single-member constituencies by first-past-the-post.[3] There were 164 polling stations.[4]Campaign[edit]During the campaign Gaston Browne said that he would make the country an economic powerhouse in the Caribbean. He also campaigned on turning around a stagnant economy, high unemployment and crime. He further sought to bring about full employment and attract investment while saying “there will be no quick fixes” and it would take time to change.[4]Results[edit]The Labour Party won 14 of 17 seats, while the ruling UPP won the other three seats.[5] UPP Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer was re-elected in his seat by a narrow margin of about 30 votes.[6] Arthur Nibbs of the Labour Party was elected in Barbuda by a single vote, which remains the last occasion that a national party won the Barbuda constituency.By constituency[edit]ConstituencyElectorateTurnout%Political partyCandidateVotes%All Saints East & St. Luke3,3653,08791.74United Progressive PartyJoanne Massiah1,43851.69Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyColin James1,43846.78Antigua Barbuda People’s MovementOwen George120.39All Saints West3,9593,56089.92Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyMichael Browne1,93154.49United Progressive PartyLorencezo Codrington1,59645.03Antigua & Barbuda True Labour PartyDayton Samuel170.48Barbuda1,01797295.58Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyArthur Nibbs48550.05Barbuda People’s MovementTrevor Walker48449.95St. George4,5354,01288.47Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyDean Jonas2,18254.51United Progressive PartyJacqui Quinn-Leandro1,76544.09Antigua and Barbuda True Labour PartyKelton Dalso561.40St. John’s City East1,5851,48093.38Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyMelford Nicholas79453.79United Progressive PartyHarold Lovell68246.21St. John’s City South1,4591,32390.68Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyCutie Benjamin82862.92United Progressive PartyMervyn Richards48837.08St. John’s City West2,3352,13191.26Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyGaston Browne1,39465.57United Progressive PartyColin Derrick73234.43St. John’s Rural East4,1693,71989.21Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyLester Bird2,14457.95United Progressive PartyLeon Cort1,55642.05St. John’s Rural North3,4063,08990.69Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyMax Fernandez1,86060.55United Progressive PartyHubert Maginley1,20539.23Missing Link VOPNigel Bascus70.23St. John’s Rural South2,9242,59288.82Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyEustace Lake1,54859.84United Progressive PartyPhilmore Benjamin1,01139.08Antigua and Barbuda True Labour PartyVere Bird III281.08St. John’s Rural West4,4933,97888.54United Progressive PartyBaldwin Spencer1,99350.38Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyLondell Benjamin1,96349.62St. Mary’s North4,1273,69089.41Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyMolwyn Joseph2,08956.80United Progressive PartyChester Hughes1,58943.20St. Mary’s South2,1311,95991.93Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartySamantha Marshall1,00952.09United Progressive PartyHilson Baptiste92847.91St. Paul2,7342,45389.72Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyChet Green1,45359.23United Progressive PartyEleston Adams96939.53Antigua and Barbuda True Labour PartyShoy Athill291.18St. Peter2,8492,52688.66Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyAsot Michael2,18254.51United Progressive PartyClephane Roberts73328.83Antigua and Barbuda True Labour PartySharlene Warner-Samuel522.08St. Philip North1,5801,44691.52Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyRobin Yearwood95166.23United Progressive PartyShawn Nicholas48533.77St. Philip South1,05696891.67United Progressive PartyWilmoth Daniel52354.37Antigua and Barbuda Labour PartyLennox Weston43945.63Source: Caribbean ElectionsReactions[edit]Browne said of the result that “it is evident that the people have spoken and they have spoken resoundly. [sic] [I am] very humbled by the mandate. The reality is that this country is in dire straits and would require the efforts of the entire nation. [The win is] one for you the people. We have actually set an impressive vision for this country. I remain hopeful and very optimistic about the future of the Antigua and Barbuda. I want us to work towards the vision and to make Antigua and Barbuda the envy of the other countries in the world. [The victory] itself actually speaks volumes. I would not think we could have deserved a better out turn.”[4] Spencer accepted defeat, saying that the people had clearly chosen the ALP.[6]International\u00a0Saint Kitts and Nevis Team Unity leader Timothy Harris congratulated Browne and said he would support the new government. He added: “I extend my very best wishes to you and your incoming administration as you assume the mandate of service to the people of Antigua and Barbuda and the region. From our many interactions over the years, I know that you are passionate and committed to build a better Antigua and Barbuda and Caribbean region. In that noble mission of service to the people you have our every encouragement and support.”[5]Government formation[edit]Attorney Steadroy “Cuttie” Benjamin became the attorney general.[4]References[edit]"},{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org\/","@type":"BreadcrumbList","itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"item":{"@id":"https:\/\/wiki.edu.vn\/en\/wiki40\/#breadcrumbitem","name":"Enzyklop\u00e4die"}},{"@type":"ListItem","position":2,"item":{"@id":"https:\/\/wiki.edu.vn\/en\/wiki40\/2014-antiguan-general-election-wikipedia\/#breadcrumbitem","name":"2014 Antiguan general election – Wikipedia"}}]}]
