They sent intelligence reports to OSS agents stationed in China. The team provided training, medical and logistical assistance to H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh and the Vi\u1ec7t Minh in 1945. Deer Team worked closely with H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh and V\u00f5 Nguy\u00ean Gi\u00e1p, whom they knew only as &#8220;Mr. Hoo&#8221; and &#8220;Mr. Van&#8221;.[1]The two groups were friendly and fought as comrades-in-arms to capture the Japanese garrison at Tan Trao, and celebrated that victory by getting drunk together.[2]The Americans left camp on August\u00a016, not long after hearing the news of Japanese surrender. They traveled on foot with V\u00f5 Nguy\u00ean Gi\u00e1p and his troops to Th\u00e1i Nguy\u00ean, the French provincial capital. Lieutenant Defourneaux explained:[3]&#8220;H\u1ed3 was so ill he could not move from the corner of a smoky hut. [&#8230;] Our medic thought it might have been dysentery, dengue fever, hepatitis. [&#8230;] While being treated by Pfc Hoagland, H\u1ed3 directed his people into the jungle to search for herbs. H\u1ed3 shortly recovered, attributing it to his knowledge of the jungle.&#8221;[1]When H\u1ed3 Ch\u00ed Minh discovered a French agent sent with the Deer Team who was apparently part of it: &#8220;This man is not an American.
