The zones are parts of cities at various levels in the formal hierarchy but are known as “national-level” or “state-level” in reference to the preferential policies and privileges that are granted directly by the State Council. These privileges are to encourage and attract new developments (particularly foreign direct investment) to speed up the city’s economy.[1]DivisionHanzi (S) & PinyinDesignatedArea(km2)JurisdictionPudong New Area(administrative)浦东新区; Pǔdōng Xīnqū11 October 1992[2]1,210Shanghai (Pudong)Binhai New Area(administrative)滨海新区; Bīnhǎi Xīnqū9 November 2009[3]2,270Tianjin (Binhai)Liangjiang New Area两江新区; Liǎngjiāng Xīnqū18 June 2010[4]1,205Chongqingparts of Jiangbei, Yubei, & BeibeiZhoushan Archipelago New Area舟山群岛新区; Zhōushān Qúndǎo Xīnqū8 July 2011[5]1,440Zhoushan (Dinghai, Putuo, Daishan, & Shengsi)Lanzhou New Area兰州新区; Lánzhōu Xīnqū20 August 2012[6]806LanzhouNansha New Area南沙新区; Nánshā Xīnqū19 September 2012[7]527Guangzhou (Nansha)Xixian New Area西咸新区; Xīxián Xīnqū6 January 2014[8]882Xi’an & Xianyangparts of Hu, Chang’an, Weiyang, Qindu, Weicheng, Xingping, & JingyangGuian New Area贵安新区; Guìān Xīnqū6 January 2014[9]1,795Guiyang & Anshunparts of Huaxi, Qingzhen, Pingba, & XixiuXihai’an New Area(administrative)西海岸新区; Xīhǎiàn Xīnqū3 June 2014[10]2,096Qingdao (Huangdao)Jinpu New Area金普新区; Jīnpǔ Xīnqū23 June 2014[11]2,299Dalianparts of Jinzhou & PulandianTianfu New Area天府新区; Tiānfǔ Xīnqū2 October 2014[12]1,578Chengdu & Meishanparts of Wuhou, Shuangliu, Longquanyi, Jianyang, Xinjin, Pengshan, & RenshouXiangjiang New Area湘江新区; Xiāngjiāng Xīnqū8 April 2015[13]490Changshaparts of Yuelu, Wangcheng, & NingxiangJiangbei New Area江北新区; Jiāngběi Xīnqū2 July 2015[14]806Nanjingparts of Pukou, Luhe, & QixiaFuzhou New Area福州新区; Fúzhōu Xīnqū30 August 2015[15]800Fuzhouparts of Mawei, Cangshan, Changle, & FuqingDianzhong New Area滇中新区; Diānzhōng Xīnqū7 September 2015[16]482Kunming, Qujing, Chuxiong, & Yuxi parts of Anning, Songming, Xundian, Lufeng, Malong, & YimenHarbin New Area哈尔滨新区; Hārbīn Xīnqū22 December 2015[17]493Harbinparts of Songbei, Hulan, & PingfangChangchun New Area长春新区; Chángchūn Xīnqū2 February 2016[18]499Changchunparts of Chaoyang, Kuancheng, Erdao, & JiutaiGanjiang New Area赣江新区; Gànjiāng Xīnqū14 June 2016[19]465Nanchang & Jiujiangparts of Qingshanhu, Xinjian, Gongqingcheng, & YongxiuXiong’an New Area雄安新区; Xióng’ān Xīnqū1 April 2017[20]100Baodingparts of Anxin County, Rongcheng County, & Xiong CountyProvincial-level and prefectural-level new areas[edit]Provincial-level and prefectural-level new areas are not governed by the central government rather by the provincial or prefectural government.[citation needed]County-level new areas[edit]Township-level new areas[edit]References[edit]^ Liu, Qiang. 副省级新区建设风起：行政区划调整或将解冻？. 21st century economic report (21世纪经济报道).
