The season had no official boundaries, and storms can form year-round, as evidenced by the formation of Tropical Storm Bolaven in late December 2017, and Tropical Storm Pabuk on December 31, 2018. Despite this, activity usually peaks between May and November. The season featured above-average activity, with 29 named storms, 13 typhoons, and 7 super typhoons forming in the West Pacific.[1][2][nb 1]The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is the official Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre for the Western Pacific Basin. As such, it is responsible for assigning names to all tropical cyclones that reach 10-minute maximum sustained winds of at least 65 kilometres per hour (40 mph) in the region.[4] The PAGASA assigns names to tropical cyclones that form or enter their area of responsibility as a tropical depression or stronger, regardless if the cyclone has been assigned a name by the JMA.[5] The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) also monitors systems in the Western Pacific Basin, assigning systems a number with a “W” suffix if the system is a tropical depression or stronger.Table of Contents (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4Timeline[edit]January[edit]February[edit]March[edit]April[edit]May[edit]June[edit]July[edit]August[edit]September[edit]October[edit]November[edit]December[edit]References[edit]Timeline[edit]January[edit]January 1January 202:45 UTC – 01W makes its sixth and final landfall on Aborlan.[8]January 3January 4February[edit]February 8February 10February 11February 13February 14February 15February 16March[edit]March 24March 25March 27March 28March 29March 30March 31April[edit]April 1May[edit]May 10May 12May 13May 14May 15June[edit]June 2June 3June 4June 5June 6June 7June 8June 9June 10June 11June 13June 14June 15June 16June 17June 1806:00 UTC – the South China Sea tropical depression dissipates.[24]June 2118:00 UTC – Gaemi dissipates.[1]June 28June 29July[edit]July 1July 2July 3July 4July 5July 6July 8July 9July 10July 11July 1300:00 UTC – Maria dissipates over Central China.[1]July 14July 15July 1611W made 3 landfalls on Camiguin de Babuyanes, Fuga Island, and Dalupiri Island.[32]July 17July 18Son-Tinh made a fifth landfall on Hà Tĩnh Province.[37]July 19July 20July 21July 22Son-Tinh made a sixth landfall on Hainan.[7]July 23Son-Tinh made a seventh and eighth landfall on the Leizhou Peninsula.[7]July 24July 25July 26July 27July 28July 29July 30July 31August[edit]August 1August 2August 3August 4August 5August 6August 7August 8August 9August 10August 11August 12August 13August 14August 15August 16August 17August 18August 19August 20August 21August 22August 23August 24August 25August 26August 27August 28August 29August 30August 31September[edit]September 1September 2September 3September 4September 5September 6September 7September 8September 9September 10September 11September 12September 13September 1417:30 UTC – Mangkhut makes its first landfall on Baggao.[76]September 15September 16September 17September 1800:00 UTC – Mangkhut dissipates over Southern China.[1]September 20September 21September 22September 23September 24September 25September 26September 27September 28September 29September 30October[edit]October 1October 2October 3October 4October 5October 6October 718:00 UTC – Kong-rey dissipates.[1]October 19October 20October 21October 22October 23October 24October 25October 26October 27October 28October 29October 30October 31November[edit]November 2November 306:00 UTC – Yutu dissipates over the South China Sea.[1]November 13November 16November 17November 18November 20November 21November 22November 23November 24November 25November 26November 27November 28November 3012:00 UTC – Man-yi crosses the International Date Line.[1]December[edit]December 2506:00 UTC at 8°N 135°E / 8°N 135°E / 8; 135 – the JMA begins tracking a tropical depression in the Philippine Sea.[97]07:00 UTC – the Philippine Sea tropical depression enters the PAR, prompting the PAGASA to assign it the local name Usman.[98]December 27December 28December 2915:00 UTC – the JMA stops tracking 35W.[100]December 31^ Super typhoons are an unofficial classification given by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center for storms whose strength are 130 knots (240 km/h; 150 mph) or above.[3]^ The position is as of 02:00 UTC.^ The position is as of 19:00 UTC.^ The position is as of 14:00 UTC.^ The position is as of 02:00 UTC.^ The position is as of 07:00 UTC.^ The position is as of 20:00 UTC.References[edit]^ a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z aa ab ac ad ae af ag ah ai aj ak al am an ao ap aq ar as at au av aw ax ay az ba bb bc bd be bf bg bh bi bj bk bl bm bn bo bp bq br bs bt bu bv bw bx by bz ca cb cc cd ce cf cg ch ci cj ck cl cm cn co cp cq cr cs ct cu cv cw cx cy cz da db dc dd de df dg dh di dj dk dl dm dn do dp dq dr ds dt du dv dw dx dy dz ea eb ec ed ee ef eg eh ei ej ek el em en eo ep eq er es et eu ev ew ex ey ez fa fb fc fd fe ff fg fh fi fj fk fl fm fn fo fp fq fr fs ft fu fv fw fx fy fz ga gb gc gd ge gf gg gh gi gj gk gl gm gn go gp gq gr gs gt gu gv gw gx gy Annual Report on the Activities of the RSMC Tokyo – Typhoon Center 2018 (PDF) (Report).
