Phân họ Lan biểu sinh được chia thành hai nhánh hoặc hai phân nhóm, gọi là Lan biểu sinh bậc cao và Lan biểu sinh bậc thấp. Nhóm Lan biểu sinh bậc cao một phần là [[đơn ngành]] và một phần là [[đa ngành]] (các tông [[Arethuseae]] và [[Epidendreae]]). Nói chung, sự phân loại này được thay đổi thường xuyên.
