Die gr\u00f6\u00dfte Verwaltungsabteilung in Chile ist die einer Region mit insgesamt 16.  Jede Provinzregierung (Provinz gobernaci\u00f3n) wird von einem Gouverneur geleitet (Gobernador) vom Pr\u00e4sidenten ernannt.  Der Gouverneur \u00fcbt seine Befugnisse gem\u00e4\u00df den Anweisungen des regionalen Intendanten aus (Intendente).  Der Gouverneur wird vom Wirtschafts- und Sozialrat der Provinz beraten (Consejo Econ\u00f3mico y Social Provincial oder CESPRO).  Die einzige Ausnahme bildet die Provinz Santiago, die in ihren Vorschriften keine Provinzregierung vorsieht.  Die Position entspricht dem Intendanten der Metropolregion Santiago.
