Festival of 3 continents — Wikipedia

The Festival Des 3 Continents , Created in 1979 in Nantes by Philippe and Alain Jalladeau, is a manifestation devoted to the cinematographies of Asia, Africa and Latin America which takes place each year at the end of November.

By its clearing work on very little explored territories, the festival has largely contributed to discovering in the West unknown sections of the history of cinema, and revealed great authors of the past and the present like Abbas Kiarostami, Hou Hsiao-Hsien , Souleymane Cissé, Ritwik Ghatak or Guru Dutt.

The 3 -continent festival was created in 1979 by two film brothers and travelers, Alain and Philippe Jalladeau, and his name is inspired by the Theater Festival, the 2 world festival which takes place at Spolate in Italy. At the time, knowledge of non-Western cinema in Europe was still very incomplete and its dissemination with the fragmentary and confidential public. The festival project, which is to highlight films and documentaries from Asia, Africa and Latin America, obtains the support of the city of Nantes. The programming of the first edition, ensured by Les Jalladeau, Claude Michel Cluny, Serge Daney and journalist Catherine Ruelle, introduces African-American cinema [ first ] In the presence of filmmakers such as Charles Burnett and Melvin Van Peebles, while the competition immediately reveals a major filmmaker, Souleymane Cissé, awarded a golden hot air balloon (the first prize in the competition) for Work . For this first edition, 7,000 admissions are recorded, it is a success [ first ] .

During the 80s, each edition confirms the pioneering role of the festival more. In 1980, we discovered in Nantes the cinema of Kerala and South India (notably with Ador Gopalakrishnan) and the work of Brazilian Nelson Pereira Dos Santos. A retrospective devoted to Philippin cinema contributes to the birth of the Cinémathèque Philippine, in a country where practically nothing was presented. The following year, the increasingly numerous public discovered, dazzled, the major works of two ignored masters, Ritwik Ghatak [ 2 ] et guru dutt [ 3 ] . The festival creed is twofold: revealing cinematographies that hitherto escaped the radars of Western cinephilia, and bring out the great contemporary creators. Thus, in 1983 and 1984, a Taiwanese filmmaker named Hou Hsiao-Hsien received two golden hot air balloon, thus helping to launch the new Taiwanese wave. In 1988, an immense filmmaker unknown outside his country took his first steps in Nantes, Abbas Kiarostami [ 4 ] . Over the years, European festivals have started to look south and stirs up competition to discover new names. But the 3 continent festival continues its clearing work with its retrospectives and panoramas.

In 2007, the Alain and Philippe Jalladeau brothers contract, founders and artistic directors of the festival, was not renewed by the board of directors. The latter, judging the festival which was to face more and more activities should avoid dispersion, by calling on a single person who could have authority over the whole team, conception that did not share the founding brothers who remain owners of the brand, however Festival Des 3 Continents » Deposited at the INPI [ 5 ] . In 2008 and 2009, the festival management was provided by Philippe Reilhac, while teacher Jérôme Baron and the critic Jean-Philippe Tessé, associated with programming since 2003, have composed the selection. In 2010, Jérôme Baron became artistic director, ensuring the historical continuity of the festival. It is surrounded, at the programming, by Charlotte Garson then Aurélie Godet until 2016, when Portuguese criticism and programmer Aisha Rahim joined the team, to which is added in 2021 the Critique Florence Maillard.

Supported by the local public, with around 25,000 spectators present at each edition [ 6 ] In the different rooms that welcome it (essentially Katorza and cinematograph), the festival also diversifies, both in its programming (programming young audiences, competition dedicated to the documentary between 2003 and 2006, exhibitions …) as in its work support for films all year round, especially with schoolchildren. In parallel, the festival is involved in the creation with the birth in 2000 of the “Producing South” seminar, a training workshop for young producers in the South, selected on projects [ 7 ] . This seminar, coordinated by Guillaume Mainguet, takes place every year in several cities around the world.

During each edition, two prizes are awarded to the films of the competition by the jury, the golden hot air balloon (first prize) and, since 1992, the silver hot air balloon. The public gives a price after a vote, as well as a jury made up of young people. Four filmmakers obtained two golden hotbbles: Hou Hsiao-Hsien ( LES Garçons de FENGKUEI In 1983, A summer at Grandpa EN 1984), Amir Naderi ( The runner In 1985, water, wind, earth in 1989), Abolfazl Jalili ( A true story in 1996, The dividend EN 2001) ET JIA ZHANG-KE ( Xiao Wu, Artisan PickPocket in 1998, Platform in 2000).

The 3 continent festival is renowned for its retrospectives, which have revealed sometimes unknown cinematographies in the West, and major filmmakers. Some filmmakers were the subject of integral retrospectives, such as Glauber Rocha in 2000 or Satyajit Ray in 2006.
