The San Juan Bautista Cathedral , informally known as Iquitos cathedral O Iquitos Matrix Church [ 2 ] It is the main Catholic temple of the Peruvian city of Iquitos.

It is located in the Historic Center of the city, at the intersection of the Jirones Arica and Putumayo. It is currently under the authority of Bishop Miguel Olaortúa Laspra. [ 3 ] It is owned by the Catholic Church, [ 2 ] And was declared a Cultural Historical Heritage of the Nation in 1996. Being an excellent example of the V architectural stage of Iquitos (1915-1940), the construction of the cathedral began in 1911 after the demolition of the old temple and was inaugurated on March 16, 1919, with the tower being completed in 1924. He was born on October 18 of the Holy Year of 1958, in León (Spain). On September 17, 1976, he entered the novitiate of the Augustinians in Becerril de Campos, in Palencia (Spain). He made his temporary votes on September 18, 1978 in the order of San Agustín and his solemn profession on March 19, 1982. He concluded his high school studies in theology in the Augustinian theological study of Valladolid (Spain), in June 1982. It was ordered deacon on June 28, 1982 by Mons. Nicolás Castellanos Franco, Bishop of Palencia (Spain). He was ordered as a priest on September 12, 1982 by the Apostolic Vicar of Iquitos, Mons. Gabino Peral de la Torre. (1997-2001) and Our Lady of Health (2001-2002). He was responsible for the Augustinian predictory of Our Lady of Health, Iquitos (2003–2005). Subsequently, he served as pastor of the Our Lady of Health parish (2006-2013). He also had the position of Regional Vicar of the PP. Agustinos (2001-2014). Years later he was appointed member of the National Pastoral Animation Team of the Movement for a better world (1998-2013) and pastor of the San Juan Bautista parish-Cathedral (2014-2019).

Between February and November 2019 he held the position of president of the PP Federation. Agustinos, was also appointed Diocesan Administrator of Iquitos, on November 4, 2019.

Access to the crypt is behind the high major of the great hall, just behind the replica of the cathedral. The place contains the remains of the first bishops of the Vicariate of Iquitos such as the Monsignor Sotelo Redondo and José García Pulgar La Torre, also the remains of the late Monsignor Miguel Olaortúa Laspra. The Iquitos Cathedral is prominently neo -Gothic, as an important choice of medieval Gothic style, and rejecting the neoclassical style as a sharp separation from a nationalist presentation.
