The 4. FIFA Futsal World Championship from November 18 to December 3, 2000 took place in the Guatemaltec capital Guatemala City. The 16 participating teams played out the fourth futsal world champion under the patronage of FIFA in 40 games.
The Spanish team was able to win the World Cup for the first time through a 4: 3 success in the final over defending champion Brazil. The Portuguese team won 4-2 against Russia in the game for 3rd place. The Brazilian Manoel was awarded both top scorer and the best player in the tournament as four years earlier.
According to Mexico, Guatemala became the second Central American country, which was the final round of an official FIFA competition. The tournament was held in two halls in the capital Guatemala City.
- The Domo Police Portivo was built on the occasion of the Futsal World Cup within eleven months. The multifunctional arena was the main venue for the tournament. A total of 28 games were played in the domo, including all games of the intermediate and final round and twelve games of the preliminary round. The hall took 7,500 spectators and also offered space for 100 media representatives. The hall is located in the 13th district.
- Twelve preliminary round areas took place in the Gimansio Teodoro Palacio Flores. The hall was completely renovated and modernized for the tournament. The changing area was completely rebuilt, the ventilation and water system was renovated, the stands were expanded to include press and VIP places and laid a new indoor floor. Up to 5,000 spectators were able to follow the games in the hall in the 5th district.
A total of 63 associations applied around the 15 final round places and thus 16 more than four years earlier. Guatemala as a host was automatically qualified.
In Europe there were five qualification groups, each with five or six teams, in which the group winner qualified. Somewhat surprisingly Portugal prevailed against the favorite Italy and Croatia against the Czech Republic. Vice World Champion Spain, the Netherlands and Russia also qualified.
In South America, the qualifiers were determined as part of the Futsal-South-American Championship 2000. Nine of the ten Conmebol members took part in the competition (only Colombia was missing), qualified South American champions and defending champions Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, which prevailed in the game for third place against Bolivia.
Eight nations, which were played out at the Concacaf Futsal Championship 2000, applied for the two other places of the Concacaf. In addition to tournament winners Costa Rica, Cuba also qualified for the end tournament. The United States for the first time missed the final round.
For Africa, only one place was available. Four teams (and thus one less than in 1996) played out the title of the African champion in Cairo and at the same time determined the Africa representative for the World Cup finals. The Egyptian team was able to use the home advantage and won the Futsal Africa Championship 2000 without loss of points.
In Asia, the participants were played out during the Futsal Asia Championship 2000. In addition to Iran, Kazakhstan and tournament host Thailand qualified. The Japanese team narrowly missed the qualification as a fourth place.
At the end of August 1999 there was a qualification tournament in Vanuatu in Oceania, which was also considered an oceania championship. As in 1996, Australia dominated the tournament and confidently prevailed without loss and 41: 4 goals.
For hosts Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Croatia, Portugal and Thailand, it was the first participation in a FIFA Futsal World Championship finals.
Placements of the participants
The mode remained unchanged compared to the previous world championships. The 16 teams initially played in four preliminary round groups with four teams each. Every team played against any other team within each group. The two group best of each group qualified for the second group phase, in which the eight teams were again distributed in two groups of four (two preliminary round winners and two preliminary round two per group) and another game played against each team. The two best of each group qualified for the semi-finals, which took place in the knockout system. In the event of a point level during the group phase, the goal difference decided on the placement.

Tobias was again the outstanding goal scorer with 19 goals and 14 templates and was also with the Golden shoe excellent.
