He then joined the Scottish branch of the aid organization Oxfam for twelve years and worked in Cambodia and Zimbabwe, among others. [2] [3]

For the first time, Gray started national elections in the Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999. He applied for the direct mandate of the Edinburgh constituency and was able to win the election before the conservative David Mcletchie. [4] Gray took various posts in the newly educated government. First he was appointed deputy minister of health, then became Minister of Health at the end of 2000 and a year later Minister of Social Justice. From May 2002 until the end of the legislative period, he finally held the post of the Minister of Companies, Transport and Lifelong Learning. [3] In the 2003 parliamentary elections, Gray lost his mandate to David McLetchie and left parliament. [5]

He went to London and worked for Alistair Darling, Member of the House. Gray succeeded John Home Robertson for the 2007 parliamentary elections and ran in the East Lothian constituency. He won the direct mandate [6] And took the position of finance minister in the Shadow Cabinet of the Labor Party. In 2008 he was elected party leader and thus replaced Wendy Alexander. In the elections in 2011, Gray defended his mandate with only 151 votes a lead just ahead of the SNP candidate. [7] As a result, he resigned as party leader at the end of the year. [2] Johann Lamont was elected as his successor. [8]
