Kenny Barron (Born on June 9, 1943 in Philadelphia, USA) [ first ] He is an American jazz pianist. He is one of the main post Bop pianists, mainly influenced by Tommy Flanagan and Wynton Kelly, but also by Thelonius Monk, Art Tatum and McCoy Tyner.
He is the younger brother of the saxophonist Tenor Bill Barron, with whom he debuted in the record world, [ 2 ] And is known for its lyrical and flexible style. He jumped to fame when he touched the piano in the Dizzy Gillespie quartet in the sixties. He has worked with hundreds of front -row musicians, such as Yusef Lateef, James Moody, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Buddy Rich, Ron Carter, Chet Baker, Benny Carter, Stan Getz, Regina Carter and Ornette Coleman. Colidera the Sphere Group and has led its own groups in performances and recordings.
Kenneth Barron was born in Philadelphia in 1943. He studied piano with Ray Bryant’s sister, and in 1957 he already played with the Melvin orchestra. In 1959 he entered the group of Philly Joe Jones [ 3 ] And in 1960 in Yusef Lateef. [ 4 ] That year he moved to New York, where he started working with James Moody, after a jam session In the Five Spot Café.
In 1963 he entered the band of Dizzy Gillespie, where he remained until 1966. Then he worked with Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard and Jimmy Owens. In the seventies he returned with Yusef Lateef and also briefly worked with Milt Jackson, Jimmy Heath and Buddy Rich. In 1973 he became part of the New Jersey Rutgers University as a piano, harmony and musical theory and has taught in it for 25 years. Between 1976 and 1980 he collaborated with Ron Carter. In 1981 together with Charlie Rouse, Ben Riley and Buster Williams formed the Sphere Group in Theloniaus Monk. The group recorded albums such as “Four for All” and “Bird Songs”, for Verve Records.
In 1986 Kenny recorded with Stan Getz the album “Voyage”, and made several tours forming part of Getz’s quartet, with Victor Lewis and Rufus Reid. Together they recorded two albums: “Anniversary” and “Serenity”, for Emarcy Records. In 1991 Getz and Barron acted in a duo for four nights in a row at the Montmartre de Copenhagen Café: the music was recorded and edited by Emarcy with the title “People Time”. In 1998 he published Duo with the low Charlie Haden the album Night and the City, which has become a contemporary jazz reference. In June 2015, he recorded with Kiyoshi Kitagawa and Johnathan Blake his latest album, “The Book of Intuition”, published in 2016.
He has been nominated nine times at the Grammy Awards and for the American Jazz Hall of Fame. The National Endowment for the Arts designated it in 2010 as “Jazz Master.” [ 3 ]
