Leopold Sacher-Masoch (father)

Leopold Johann Nepomuk Sacher-Masoch from Kronenthal (born on December 26, 1797 in Lviv, died on September 10, 1874 in Bruck An der Mur) – police director in Lviv in 1832–1848.

He studied at the University of Lviv [first] . After completing them, he worked at the government administration in Galicia, he was a poviat staroste in Ternopil (1826-1828) and Bochnia (1829-1830) [2] . Then the police director in Lviv (1831-1847) then in Prague (1848-1854, and later as a counselor in Graz (1854-1856). In 1856 he retired [first] . In Prague in 1863 he published an anonymous book entitled “Polnische Revolutionen. Erinnerungen Aus Galizien” (“Polish Revolutions. Memories of Galicia”) [2] .

At the same time, he was a recognized and respected collector of natural collections. Already in the 1930s, he was inspired by Aleksander Zawadzkí (1798–1868) to collect Galicia beetles [2] . His collections also included geological and paleontological exhibits from this region. After arriving in Prague, in 1848 he became a member of the Natural History Society (Naturhistorischen Verein) “Lotos” and in 1849-1854 he was its president. He also made friends with Joachim Barrande and with him participated in numerous trips, looking for fossils in the vicinity of Prague. His rich collections were joined by the Donation of the Czech National Museum and then the National Museum in Prague, as well as the Natural History Museum in Vienna (Naturhistorischen Museums in Wien). He also enriched with donations Landesmuseums Johanneum collections in Graz [first] .

He was a member of many scientific associations, among others: Moravian-Silesian Regional Studies (Mährisch-Schlesischen Gesellschaft für Landeskunde), the Czech Horticultural Society in Prague (Böhmische Gartenbau-Gesellschaft in Prag ür Steiermark in Graz), Entomological Association in Szczecin (Entomologischen vereins zu Stettin), German Geological Society in Berlin (Deutschen Geologischen Gesellschaft in Berlin) [first] . A member of the Cesarean Geological Institute in Vienna and the Galician Economic Society (1868-1874) [3] .

Honorary citizen of the city of Lviv (April 6, 1846 – for merits in combating Polish movement) [4] and Prague [first] .

He was the son of Johann Nepomuk Sacher (1759-1836) who came from Prague to Galicia of the official, director of the Salt Mine in Wieliczka (ennobled in 1818). In Lviv, he married a nobleman Karolina von Masoch (1802–1870), daughter of professor and former rector of the Lviv University – Francis. Because the only male descendant of the Masochów family died, Leopold took the second form of his name from his wife. He was the father of writer Leopold Sacher-Masoch.
