He started playing football at local clubs in Réunion and switched to the French mainland to Le Havre AC at the age of twelve. He went through the club’s youth department and moved back to his home to AS Excelsior Saint-Joseph after four years, where he played in the D1 promotional, the first division Réunions. After Payet was able to convince with good performance there, he was hired by Nantes in 2004. There he was initially used in the reserve team. In the 2005/06 season he was included in the professional squad. In the same season he played three games and was able to score his first goal. In his second year he drew attention to himself and ran a total of 30 times for the Canaries on, however, could only celebrate four goals. But only in the 2010/11 season did the node burst at Payet: after seven match days, he led the list of goal scorers of the Ligue 1 with just as many goals.

On June 28, 2011, Payet moved to the French champion OSC Lille, in whom he signed a four -year contract. [first] However, he was drawn to Olympique Marseille after only two years. He left Marseille in summer 2015 and went to the Premier League to West Ham United. [2] In February 2016, his contract term was extended until 2021. [3]
